Hi I'm looking for help to put together an ar type rifle but have no clue what to look for,and how much to spend. I really like the flat top style but thats abought it. some guy that I talked to at the range told me I could put one together for around $1000.00 is this true......some help and info would be much apprechited, and what brand are good and is there some that I should stay away from?

Thanks matt

I would budget about $1500 ish. Start off with buying a quality lower, either Stag or LMT. Get it registered. Then decide what sort of upper you want. Preferably to match the lower although not always necessary. I would get flattop upper with a fixed front site. That way its cheap and you dont have to buy BUIS as well, but have room for a red dot or eotech or whatever.

About this time last year i built a M-4 flat top copy with a 14.5 inch barrel on a RRA Stripped Lower. I built it for $750, That was with a BUIS, flip up style, CARBINE fatty handguards, and 6 postion collapsable stock.

A $1 000 budget will be more than enough to build your gun, Just find some one local who has the barrel wrench/action block to help you put it together so you dont have to buy those tools.

Lots of good suppliers on this board with quality parts, I should note that i put nothing used into my build

I originally built a budget AR. Before I was finished I picked up a nice upper. Through a long and convoluted process, I now have 2 complete LMT Defender 2000s  and a Stag :) . None of which I started out with...

My advice: Buy the best from the start. It's cheaper. Just save longer if you have to. What's a few hundred bucks in the long run? $1800 will get you an awesome AR. $1500 will get you a very nice one. If you put a $1000 AR up against a better one, you will see the differences in quality, fit and finish.

This is just my .02 CDN however...

Sigh, I never wanted to be a gun snob...

Good luck with your build. My only advice, other than what Kevin said, is to watch the postage charges, 10 individual shipments can start erasing gains, and, keep an eye on the EE. Good deals pop up, but you have to act fast sometimes.

Or... of you are just trying to do it on the cheap, why not buy a complete Chinese AR (CQ) for $875.00 or so. See if you like the design and the rifle then build your own rifle. No matter how much you will find people who will bad nouth the Chinese gun, it is perfectly servicable and shoots very well. It covered in an ungly grey paint but that can be fixed!!

I had a CQ-311, Loved the gunand got me hooked on the AR platform. Fun gun to shoot, but the prices for a new one now-a-days is a little steep as you can build a better quality one for less. The nice part about building one is your get to know your gun REALLY well. You can build it the way you want it the first time.

My suggestion is to try a couple of different set ups, and take what you like best from each and start from there.

I didnt put any cheap or used parts into my AR build and I will put up against any $1600-plus gun.

$875 for a Norinco? Thought they were going for $700? At that price I'd pass, I picked up a used PWA for just a little more than $875 with a GI barrel.

My advice is go for it, shouldn't cost too much, just don't get carried away with optics, rails, and other doo dads. It is very easy to get carried away, and optics can easily double the price of a build.

ETA: Go with good quality brands like Stag, Armalite, Colt (Of course) and you should have no problems. Make sure that your bolt carrier is staked properly and look for things like taper pins on the front sight base, companies that scrimp in these areas and use cheapo parts like roll pins just to save a dollar don't deserve your business.

The 875 CQ's are at P & D and have already had all the furnature changed, thats why they are $875 instead $770.00. $105.00 for all the furnature pluse changing it out which includes tapping the butt tube for 1/4 28 for the long butt stock and screw. Seems pretty fair to me really!

Enjoy the building process. It's a very rewarding journey. I have found lots and lots of CGNutters super helpful in this addiction.

I have built my own AR for competition as well as my wife's 14.5" carbine. You truly get to understand the systems.

Now, if only I had some more time to run clinics. Darn....
