Help Wanted Section:

BIG GAME GUIDES WANTED FOR NORTHERN BC.
Some hunting/horseback experience preferably. Call ...

We spend time discussing the ethics of some hunters, when they are hiring big game guides that may never have hunted???

Due to the nature of the beast, it is almost always the client that sets the ethics of a hunt. I would have no trouble hunting with a guide who had never hunted before providing:

A - He was honest about his experience
B - He had a good knowledge of the country we would hunt
C - He had a good work ethic
D - He was not an opposed to hunting or guns.

The right person would make the trip successful and enjoyable, a guy that has lots of experience, but has a personality the clashes with yours will surely become a problem.

You make some good points there.

I guess my surprise came from the fact that if *I* hired a guide I'd be counting on his experience as well as his knowledge of the area. When I think of a big game guide I think of someone who is very experienced in the sport and knows the area extremely well.

I didn't consider that other hunters may just need someone that knows the areas that may increase their chances if they haven't got much time and are in an unfamiliar area.

One of the best guides I worked with in BC was a 30 year old wrangler who had worked the area for 6 years and knew how to find and judge rams. He's never shot anything more than some whitetails off the farm, and yet I would trust him with a $20,000 Stone's Sheep hunt any day of the year.

Not all hunters make good guides, and not all good guides have to be hunters.....

I had no knowledge of the are when i was hired as a guide. I guided a spring and fall season and all my hunters took home an animal they were happy with.

would I do it again? nope. was it fun? yes. do you have to know the area before you guide it? it sure helps. but spending a few nights hovering over topo maps and listening to outfitter/guides that have hunted there will quickly get you in the game.

all across BC there is a shortage of people willing to work long hours for little pay, and use up thier own hunting seasons getting someone else's animals. have seen quite a few Help Wanted adds for guides recently.

tell you what I have learned over the years, if the outfitter has to advertise and beg for guides chances are hes not a very good person to work for or has a terrible area and lies to clients leaving the blame on the guides why they didnt get there record book animals ;)

They're probably looking for wranglers, cooks and gofers, and worded the ad to attract eager youngsters.

You need a licence to be an actual guide.

all you need is a hunters number in BC to be a guide , the outfitter gets the assistant guides licence for you

The ad posted was from a weekly paper, this week's paper has an ad saying:

Wanted: assistant guides for local hunting camp. Must be experienced. Phone...

I'm not going to bother checking if it's the same company, but if it is the people running it must be reading this thread. ;)
