Evening all,
I came across this while delivering a lawnmower.
The old fellow is interested in selling it.
So .... what is it and what would an approx. value be??
Obvious surface rust and the stock has been sanded. Heavy pitting on butt plate.
I could not find a caliber marking.
Barrel is dirty but has strong rifling.
Mosin M38 ??? 7.62x54??
Thanks for any help

Polish, Romanian, or Hungarian M44 Mosin Nagant. Should be 7.62x54R. Not a Mauser. :)

If you now own it or are going to, don't sand anything! Also, be VERY careful about removing the rust.

M44, but if you show the crest on the receiver we can tell you what country of origin. The caliber is your common russian 7.62x54

what do u guys think its worth it this cond?
I don't wanna rip the old fella off. He may have more in the closet.
Thanks
BB

I wouldn't give him much more than 200 for the condition that it is in. Although it looks like all the parts are there and the stock is not damaged. There is still a bit of work to bring it back to shape and re-blue the rust spots. Who is to say of the bore condition and if the bolt does not have any issues?

God damn it, the rust!!! :(
Looks like a very nice (was probably mint) Polish M44.
They go for about $450-$500 in brand new, non-issued condition.

With that amount of rust you will have to soak it in oil for a while then slowly and gently start scrubbing it off probably taking a lot of the surface blueing with it unfortunately.
Can still be an amazing shooter no doubt but won't have that "never shot in a sketchy Communist war" look after sadly.

I would offer a respectable $300 for her as fair with the rust being what it's at from the pictures and you say the bore is strong.

well when SIR closed out I got 2 mismatched Polish nagants $38 each. And they still had factory refurb grease that needed to be cleaned out.

that one is a mess, but prices have jumped.

what is the country code, it will be a number in a diamond about 3/4" marking on top of the barrel knox. 11 is Poland I dont recall the other ones.

my estimate $50 - $100 no more.

It's a Polish M44, Russian ones have Birch stocks this one is Beech like the Polish ones and Hungarian ones have a narrower groove in the stock for the bayonet and the complete metal stock sling slots like this Hungarian M44 -

I saw one recently that had been neglected like that one except the exterior was still like new but the idiot who last had it had shot corrosive milsurp ammo and put it away with out cleaning the bore, a .30 cleaning rod with .30 wire brush would not pass down the bore it was so encrusted with rust, about the only brush we could get down it was a .270 one! It was for sale at $200 and nobody wanted it at that price after looking down the bore!
