I know this topic has been discussed at great length, but I keep finding the threads go off track so I thought I'd get advice just for me.

I want to get my first gun, starting with a .22 seems like a good idea so I can learn to shoot accurately with little cost (ammo). On that note, I'm thinking about $450 is my upper limit since I'm in the process of buying my first home

I want a semi- auto, not a revolver.

I've read up on a bunch and think so far that I would get a GSG-1911.

Compared it to:
Ruger mark III (not really the look I want, more looking for something resembling a full size pistol)
Sig mosquito
Walther p22

I want an external hammer, nothing that resembles the internal assembly of a glock.

Advice, recommendations and criticism welcome!

Also, aside from Target Sports Canada or Bass Pro, is there anywhere to buy a pistol in and around the GTA?

Hey...

Now...which one you are thinking ?

traditional 1911...

or the tactical....with bottom rail and fake suppressor

If you are getting your first GUN, might want to consider a rifle. Less hassle to own, plus you can take it out hunting at about this time of year. Grouse are tasty.

You can get a real nice Savage bolty for $450.

Best 22 cal defence pistol is Sig-226 classic. Stay away from Mosquito because they only come with one year warranty. Mine, the slide broke in two after three years, due to the fact that it's made from Zinc alloy. I had it laser-welded, but I won't shoot it again, it may break apart.

You could buy 9mm, 40 cal or 357 Sig slides and drop in and use with Sig-226.

I dont really care if its the gsg tactical or not, although considering the elwood price has a $20 difference, I wouldnt mind having the rail and the black grips

I'm looking for a pistol, not a rifle, but thank you for the advice :)

I believe from what I've read this is essentially the same thing as a gsg 1911, except with different grips and the sig logo on it.

how much is the sid-226? is it really interchangable with the 9mm and .40S&W???
I considered the CZ75B and getting a kadet kit so i could make it .22, but im looking around $800 for the total then, which is more than i wanted to spend to start

yes, Sig 226 is well regarded, and the gun can accept 9 mm slide/barrel kit. (i don't know about 40 s&w, but i don't see why not)
i shot it once when RO at my range brought his.

i found the grip to be less comfortable than 1911 platform (i have GSG and Norc 1911's). and with .22 LR, the slide doesn't lock open at last round.

I HIGHLY recommend GSG. it's easy to learn on, easy to shoot, easy to maintain . It is not quite 100% reliable, but it is very easy to work on. my firing pin broke at 900 round mark, but i've since put in a new one, and shot another 900. going strong. (and i have spare parts kit.)

I also have Ruger Mark III 22/45. i don't know why i got it. it's not any more accurate than my GSG. but it is dead reliable. (less comfortable in all areas though)

anyway, get gsg. only negative thing i can think of on GSG is resale... but it is a $400 gun..
