I have been thinking of buying a Winchester model 12, but it is useless to me if I cant shoot modern buck shot threw it. Is this gun any good for deer? or is it simply a duck gun?

thanks

we have a gun smith down are way and his whole gang shoots mod 12 shotguns for deer ,thy work great with foster style slugs rifled slugs ,,and buck shot ,challenger and rem buck hammers really shine from the full choke barrels ,hard to beat a win mod 12 for a all round great shotgun ,,,he took a win mod 120 rifled barrel and converted it to fit one of his mod 12 shotguns and drilled and tapped the receiver for a scope and boy this gun will really shoot ,,,get some slugs and try her out you will be happy with a good mod 12 ,,,Dutch

That guy is one heck of a gunsmith. I would love to see the amount of work required to get a 120/1200 series barrel to work on a model 12. Must have taken hours of machining and fitting. It would be great to see a pictorial of the conversion. Your smith would have models 12 owners lined up at his door for the work. My dad killed quite a few with a 30" FULL choked model 12 and Imperial SSG. Yes it will work fine.

I wouldn't use a shotgun for deer hunting unless I absolutely had to and even then I wouldn't use buckshot. Buy yourself a rifle or a shotgun set up for slugs.

The M12 in original/classic form was a duck gun.

If it has some kind of sighting arrangement I'd say go for it.

I myself used an Ithaca Deerslayer in 12 gauge using a slug on a wild boar once.

One shot into through both lungs, clipping the heart and it was DRT at around 75 yards.
(six inches of drop with 25 yard sight)

To the op. You'd be best served with a true deer shotgun. Full rifled, cantilever barrel with a low powdered scope. Shooting a sst slug or a Remington accu tip. 200 yrd deer shot gun. Basically a shotgun turned into a rifle. Or even a savage or browning bolt action slug shooter.

I am mostly a Remington guy. I've been killing deer with an 870 20 ga. for years. I do know that the Winchester 120 barrels will work on the 1200, 1300and 2200 shotguns. I'm pretty sure they will match up with a mod. 12 as well. IMHO.

I was looking at the gun today and asked him about it ,he says he unscrewed the extention off the barrel and rethreaded it to fit the model 12 ,I could not tell it apart from the other model 12s he had in the rack .....Dutch

I would thing he did ,,,but I do not know ,this gun is a gun smith with a shop full of tool ,mills lathes and all the goodys ,I took a good look at this gun as it was in a rack with 10 other model 12s that he and his wife hunt with and it was hard to tell them apart other then the rifle sights on the barrel ,,I had to stick my finger in the end of the barrel to feel the rifling ,to know ...Dutch
