Gentlemen, a friend of mine in the US is researching the Winchester Model 71. A major part of his research is the compiling of a database of known Model 71’s. If you have one or more Model 71’s, your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Here is what he needs:

Full serial number: (each rifle or carbine is catalogued by serial number, so the full serial number is required to avoid duplicate entries)

Barrel length from breach to muzzle:
Deluxe or standard:
Caliber:
Length of upper tang from hammer slot to top of tang:
Barrel date: (If you are willing, it is located on underside of barrel, a two-digit number near receiver)
Type of rear sight:
Receiver drilled and tapped?: yes or no
Is the muzzle crowned or flat?

If you can pm me with the information, I will pass on the info to him. This type of database is very useful for reconstructing the manufacturing history of the Model 71. Eventually, there will be an article on the findings.

P.S. I'm constructing a similar database on surviving Winchester Model 53's so if you have not sent me your info yet, I would be very grateful to receive it.

Shoot. There goes that idea. I was seriously thinking of making the 71 a research project of mine to try to get something published on it in the Winchester Collector sometime. Have to put all those research skills I picked up in grad school to use someday. There is not a lot of good info out there on this model.
I will PM you the info on my Deluxe when I get a moment.
Matt

Hey Matt,

I think Bert would be very happy to pass the database and research on to you. I'll email you tomorrow about this.

OKcorrel, yes, it's Bert

Kirk,
That sounds great. I can imagine Bert is very busy on his end with all the other research he has going on, so yes, do touch base with him and let me know. I certainly don't care to be stepping on anyone's toes. I may have to refresh myself a bit, but the two years I spent at grad school was spent in a highly quantitative program (as opposed to qualitative research, though I have done both) where we employed a wide variety of quantitative methods in our research. Should leave me in good stead. I really enjoy the 71 and would like to contribute in some fashion to the literature. I thought maybe I could put something together for the Winchester Collector magazine, then depending on how that works out, a small broader publication. Another excuse to spend countless more hours staring at guns on the Internet!
On another note, I just missed out on a couple 71 deluxe carbines in the US, real screamers. Nice to have, but man they are not cheap!!
