Ok guys... My buddy throws out that I can't hit a popcan at 500 yards in 3 shots with my Ruger scout in .308....

I told him to bring it on - bet is for a 40 oz bottle of Captain's Spiced.

The rules are this :

1. Has to be Standing (but he never said no bipod or tripod so I am going to use one - lol)
2. 3 shots only
3. 500 yards
4. with my Ruger scout rifle - it has a Leupold VX-R 4-12 x40 on it... should I get/borrow something longer range or will the Leupold be enough.

LOL, I want to win this bet and I will bend the rules (or non mentioned rules) where I can because for me - thats a LONG shot...

Advice, tips, Only shoot out to 300 ever.

If you can get a higher mag. scope you may have a chance. But based on your experience, the shooting position, and number of attempts... he's already won.

If I were you I would go practice first and zero your scope for 500 yards, even if you get a 5 - 8 inch group on paper. if you have very stable shooting sticks or something like that, you might make it in 3 shots.

I would also paint the can blaze orange

make sure its not a windy day...

good luck

Find a VERY large pop can....

OR, make a wall of cans...I'm sure if you make the wall big enough, you'll hit one of them.

sounds like we have a perfect candidate for the "my rifle can shoot.....all day long" threads ahaha

"Hail Mary" - maybe with a precision rifle off a bench or prone, that's like a .5 - .25 MOA target - so, same as a quarter (coin) at a 100 yards. BUT, go confidently and have fun! (Out with my buddy, I once hit a sparrow hovering in a stiff breeze about 80 to 100 yards away with my scoped 22, from standing, 1 shot. Didn't REALLY think it would work, but it did - and it was cool!)

Good Luck! :D

Coho you get loading lots ammo and practice but to hit pop can at 500y off hand you could hit the first shot then fire 4159 shots till you hit it again
buy the bottle x2

Lean against something solid like a telephone pole, and use a standing-type bipod. Also use match ammo, and do what was already mentioned- go out and zero your rifle at 500 yards with the match ammo, then practice a bunch. Your current scope is fine. You have a chance as long as it isn't windy.
