Hey guys, help would be appreciated with a recipe for Trailboss and .357. There seems to be some conflicting info in the Lee Manual for OAL. The diagram shows the round as being OAL 1.590 yet in the text it says 1.610. I used the following recipe and it was weak. The book calls for 3.2 Grains min and 4.2 max. I shot the following out of a S&W 686-3 with a 6 inch barrel....really weak

Bullet - Berrys plated 158 Gr
Primer - CCI small pistol magnum (only because I bought them by mistake) I was told the magnum primer was anecdotally equal to 1/2 grain of powder.
3.2 Grains Trail Boss powder
OAL 1.610

So I am thinking just raising the powder up a bit and shortening the bullet to 1.580 - 1.585

Anyone done something similar/different

Thanks in advance

the magnum primers help with better ignition with ball powders like w231 and the like.

from hodgdon's website,
---------------------------------------------------------------Start-----------------------Max-------------------
158 GR. CAST LSWC IMR Trail Boss .357" 1.610" ------3.2-----754----16,500 CUP------ 4.2---865----20,400 CUP

my lee mold for 158gr LSWC's measure 0.644" and berry's measure 0.688"

i load my 357's using berry's at 1.620" for no apparent reason, but i use h110 powder - 15.5 grains.

Trail Boss was designed for light loads.. ie Cowboy shooting and other reduced velocities loads

In some loads using TB pressure can spike VERY QUICK Low velocity does not mean Low Pressure !!!!!!!!

They have stated do not Compress Trail Boss !!!!!

If you want faster (more recoil) switch to a different powder

Trail Boss was developed to provide a larger volume of powder for light recoil cowboy rounds, thus, that are the published loadings mostly available.

If you might want to try a different powder if you are looking for snappy .357 mag rounds.

As well I have used TB quite a bit and find it very position sensitive when shooting downhill so if you plan on using your .357 out of a tree stand , I'd look elsewere as well. You will get more squib rounds & unburnt confetti than you want.

Sorry about repeating what you said. I started typing and had to leave for a few minutes before hitting the post button.

And you are very right about the pressure spikes of T/B.
