want to load 40 S&W got 180 gr. lead have some win 231 but manuals say 5 gr of 231 is max but this doesn;t make major. Help Sorry if this question has been answered before but got a new sti and want it to work well.

Get a different powder.. I tell people that reloading is like baking a cake.. If you don't like your results change your ingredients..

Titegroup is a much nicer powder then 231 for 40... so is AA#9

Have you actually chronied the load in your gun?

I also know that Tightgroup is the big deal south of the border for IPSC shooters who don't want to shoot Vit.

40SW Major using W231

I am using W231 with 180gr (FMJ, TMJ & JHP, not lead) in a P16-40 LTD (5" barrel).

With 5.6 grains it was making 179-180PF (CED Millenium chrono, confirmed at various IPSC matches) but alas this was too much and the rear sight windage mechanism was damaged. I sent the slide to PO for repair (which was free :) ) and they reported "battering" caused by a weak spring and/or excessive loads.

So I replaced the spring and reduced my load to 5.2 grains, which gives me 173-174 @ 15°, likely all I needed in the first place.

For more IPSC loads check out Maass.

Load carefully.

All I load is small rifle primers, might not be the best idea with a revolver. Bump your load a couple of tenths of a grain, 231 is a good powder for a lead bullet.

5.4 of 231 makes major in my Edge with 180 gr montanas and frontiers.

It is about 178PF, which is good for me - and the chronies in Ontario.

Chronographs that is...

:D

The benefit with small rifle primers is then you don't need a different kind when you reload .223. :)

Oh and of course the heavier cup gives improved protection against blown/pierced primers.

Power Pistol is pretty good, I use it for 9mm, but it also works for .40..

it gives pretty high velocities; 147gr 9mm @ 1100fps(max) :)
