want to load 40 S&W got 180 gr. lead have some win 231 but manuals say 5 gr of 231 is max but this doesn;t make major. Help Sorry if this question has been answered before but got a new sti and want it to work well.
I am using W231 with 180gr (FMJ, TMJ & JHP, not lead) in a P16-40 LTD (5" barrel).
With 5.6 grains it was making 179-180PF (CED Millenium chrono, confirmed at various IPSC matches) but alas this was too much and the rear sight windage mechanism was damaged. I sent the slide to PO for repair (which was free ) and they reported "battering" caused by a weak spring and/or excessive loads.
So I replaced the spring and reduced my load to 5.2 grains, which gives me 173-174 @ 15°, likely all I needed in the first place.
All I load is small rifle primers, might not be the best idea with a revolver. Bump your load a couple of tenths of a grain, 231 is a good powder for a lead bullet.
