Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum and new to shooting/hunting. My first rifle purchase (last summer) was an entry level Savage M-10 .308 package with a wood stock and cheap scope (the wood is Birch, I think, stained a deeper brown on outside surfaces).

I went out hunting last fall and me and all my gear got really wet, heavy rain for over 16+ hrs. At the end of the day, after not seeing any animals, I fired 10 practice shots.

Got home, took the rifle apart to dry it out knowing it was completely soaked. To my surprise, I found that the stock was cracked along the grain (i.e. in line with the barrel) at both the forward and rear action screws (with factory pillars/spacers). The cracks go all the way thru the thinnest part of the stock around where the magazine well is cut-out. And the stock portion of the recoil lug is also cracked thru. The wood was definitely water logged, it was all swelled up when I disassembled the rifle. ~maybe~ those 10 shots were enough to crack the wood?

Anyway, I haven't touched the rifle since then. I'm hoping to get some advice from you guys on my options for moving forward.

So here are the options I'm considering:
1- repair the stock with adhesive and additional cross pin (not 100% sure what adhesive and pin materials I would use)
2- try to find a factory "take off" stock, preferably the cheap plastic kind (any advice where/how to go about finding one of these?)
3- any other options you guys want to suggest?

Thanks very much for your help and advice. At this point, I'm concerned about safety with shooting the gun again, so it's just collecting dust until I can figure out what to do next.

Cheers.

I have repaired the custom stock on my 30-06 a couple of times. It was only smaller cracks though, they were from hunting on the westcoast and the pouring rain. I am currently trying to sell another rifle (stainless M70 300wsm on the E/E if anyone is interested) to fund a high end stock for my 30-06. In the past I bought a Boyd's laminate for a gun that is long sold. The stock was less than $200 to my door and a $50 bedding kit from my local gun store completed the total cost. I then learnt how to glass bed a rifle, it's a fun project done in a few hours plus the weekend to set. The Boyd's are heavy but very strong and durable in the weather. That is one option or look for a tupperware take off for your rifle model on the E/E.

I'd attempt to repair it first. Glue the cracks first and clamp it till dry. Then drill your holes for crossbolts one size under your screw size. Long brass machine screws work good, cover the threads in a light coat of glue, insert with a drill, cut the head off as close to stock as you can and sand both sides flush.

Thanks very much for the advice everyone.

At this point, I guess I'm leaning toward a "tupperware take off", as jpappy called it. Mostly for simplicity and to get me up and running in the short term. I'll try searching the equipment exchange.

Otherwise, if I decide I'm brave enough to try the repair and bedding route, thanks very much for the advice. I'll start with some Youtube research and probably use a brass machine screw and read up on hotshot glue.

By the way, I did call Savage, and revisited my local gun shop where I purchased the rifle... both told me I was on my own. I'm feeling much more support from you guys on the message board than what I got from them! :)

Without a picture to the contrary of what is ambout to say, if the wood has swollen to the point it has cracked it sounds like it is not to me.
Swollen wood , cracked stock is time for new wood or composite material.
And failing that contact with Warranty at Savage for some possible direction.
That's just me though.
