Hello Gents,

I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. My stepfather has just inherited all of his fathers old guns and by old, I mean old. They are in horrible condition, pretty rusty from improper storage etc. None of these guns are overly desireable from a collector point of view however there is one that holds extreme sentimental value for him. I dont have any pics but I am sure it is an old BSA sporter. There are a few proofs with the crown and a "Made in England" stamp along with the numbers H4810 which I am assuming is the serial number. It is a 98 style action 30-06 with 2 forward lugs, one rear and a beefy claw extractor, Right side rear safety with a kinda Enfield style switch. This gun has been horribly bubba'd, it is in a crappy homemade softwood stock (badly cracked) with broken screws etc. I was hoping to help him restore this old girl for Xmas. I am not overly fussy, I am just looking for something that will work.

Where can I find a Stock for this beast???

Are there any other 98 style guns that had similar stocks that I can find and make work??

Thanks,
Any Help is appreciated,

If it's a '98, well then a '98 stock will fit. But if you ask on The Stalking Directory you'll get lots of answers- it's a UK based forum with one or two guys who are really clued up on BSA and Parker Hale rifles.

Hope this helps.

It sounds like either a P14 or M1917 Enfield. Caliber will tell you which. P14's are generally 303 Brit and M17's are originally 30-06 although many had different calibre barrels screwed on. BSA did sporter conversions of both following WWII. You should be able to find after market stocks fairly easily. Try Boyd's for a start.

Sounds like a P17 (Pattern of 1917) made during WW1, to augment the Springfield (30-06) for the US military.
They are the same, basically, only different calibre, as the P14 rifles made in the same time period as the p17.
Quite a few around, maybe someone has a stock. Bit of a long shop, though.
Completely different stock than a typical Mauser stock.

If the action/safety looks like this one, it's a BSA Model E. They also offered a Model D(fancier).

That's the one, thanks a million.

Now whether it be model E or D, this is a 98 style action correct????? That being said, will any 98 style stock work for this?

Thanks again.

No, this is an Enfield Model 17 that has been modified and sporterized by BSA. As previously stated BSA also sporterized the Enfield Pattern 14 which was chambered in .303 British. The actions are near identical except for the extractor and boltface. A Mauser M98 stock will not fit this action but replacement stocks for the P14 and M17 are available from Boyd's.

Whoops. I should of mentioned that the Model E is a factory sporterized Model of 1917 Enfield. Modifications include replacing the dog-leg bolt handle, straightening the bottom metel to get rid of the military belly, removing the 'ears' and filling the hole on the rear receiver bridge, restocking and drilling and tapping for scope bases. Bases for the Remington Model 700 are proper for this rifle.

Boyds makes a sporter stock that will work with this rifle.
