I got a S56E Beretta and want to shoot upland Game, I was told it has fixed chokes with Fullchoke and Extra Full. Am I silly to think that as a new Shotgunner that I will be able to hit anything flying away quick? Do I sell this gun and get something else with better chokes for my purposes. Any thoughts??

Thats a pretty tightly choked gun you have there. You could have a gun smith open them up for you, but really it depends on what you're hunting. The extra full is probably too tight for most applications. The other option would be to get a gun with interchangeable choke tubes.

You're only a bit silly to think that you'll be able to hit anything flying away. You'll hit some, not everything.

The chokes are too tight for upland. I would suggest having a gunsmith open the chokes to improved cylinder in the bottom barrel and modified in the top barrel.

Thanks for your comments. I had checked into opening up the chokes with the local gunsmith and he thought it would be about a $250.00 bill which still makes it cheaper than buying a new gun but the other problem with this gun is it only shoots lead shot? So having said all this do you think it would still be wise to get the chokes opened up and go with Bismuth shot, or just try to sell it and and go with a new gun? Thanks guys................

I'm not aware of any places in Canada that require non-toxic shot for upland game. If you like the gun you can use tungsten matrix ammuntion for waterfowl.

Thats nutz $250 should be about $40 a barrell

First - you should confirm the true choke sizes. Does either barrel swallow a dime at the muzzle?

I went and checked what you asked and neither barrel will let a dime fit in it. Whats your thoughts on this?? The gunsmith who is quite reputable didn't like the idea of opening up the barrel for some reason. I was hoping he could open it up so I could shoot Upland birds, mostly Chukar, Hungarian Partridge and Pheasant with an Improved Choke and a Modified Choke. This is a really nicely made gun and if I was to have to get rid of it does anybody have an idea what it might be worth, again, BERETTA, S56E, thanks for all the help

They are a very nice gun. Problem with them is that they are old and it is very difficult to buy parts for them. I looked at one six or seven years ago as a back up gun for trap. They wanted $800 and I left it on the shelf after I checked and found parts were very difficult to find then. If I remember correctly, the barrels are fairly thin walled. This makes it difficult to open them up very much. If you live in South Western Ontario, I have a bore gauge and we could check the bores and chokes to determine what you actually have. Then you could go from there.

I suspect the reason the gunsmith doesn't want to do the work and why the cost is higher is because IIRC the barrels on the S56E are chrome lined. Chrome lining is great for rust protection but it makes the barrels harder and more difficult to machine.

Yes, they are chrome lined. Improved Modified lower barrel, Full upper.

I have a brother in law who has hunted pheasants with a fixed choke Berreta SXS since 1985, and never even blinked .
Bores are choked Mod/full and he has never had an issue with it, or his Berreta O/U either, with is choked the same.
I also shoot a few guns that are choked tightly, one is FULL/FULL and i don't mess up birds unless I make a lousy hit, then it wouldn't matter on a pointed bird if I were shooting my CYL/CYL gun!!:p
I wouldn't worry about it too much myself, shoot the gun and have fun.:)
