Search didn't work for me tonight. I'm trying to figure what weight bullet works best in the .223 Savage mod 12 FV with 26" Heavy barrel with 1 in 9 twist I have on order. I want to make some rounds up while I wait. What weight should I use I have 45, 50 and 55gr spitzers ?
thanks for your input, Hitch

From what I have read you should be using 60 to 70 grain bullets for a 1 in 9 twist depending on the length of the bullet. 55 grain bullets were meant for 1 in 12 twist that was originally in the M-16s.

Please note that I have just started reloading for 223 and this is only what I have read.

When you get your rifle check out the manual. Around the back Savage actually tells you the best bullet to use.

From my older 12fv manual.
223 Remington---- Federal 69 grain Sierra Match King BTHP

Your 55's will shoot well but you might want to go up to 60's. My best groups are with 60gr V-MAX. I haven't had much luck with 69's but I've never shot past 400 so the 60's will do for me.
good luck..

I have a report from a friend about frangible varmint rounds (I'm not sure the actual bullet, possibly blitzkings or varmint grenades) disintegrating in flight for his .223 with a 1 in 9 twist. I believe the load in question was toward the hot end of the workup range, and failure was likely due to centrifugal force.

Thanks guys! The bullets I have are for the .22 Hornet I reload for but I figured I could use them for the break in period. I'll look into getting some 69 and higher.

Berger has a handy chart which shows twist required for various bullets. Link below. If you match up bullet design (flat base vs boat tail) you can assume it is close for other manufacturers. However their VLD is quite long and does not match up so well and often needs more twist.

I would pick their 62 or 64 grain flat base Varmint bullet for shorter range, and the 70 grain VLD Target for longer range and windy conditions. The VLD needs your 9 twist.

My 12 FV shoots everything from 37gr Calhoons to 75gr Amax very well. 69gr SMK seem to work exceptionally well with 25gr Varget just off the lands.

Those of you with the Savage mod 12 in .223... Will you tell me what your TYPICALgrooping at what distance is?!?!?! Also what glass you are running? I think I decided on Vortex Viper PA 6.5-20X44 with Tally rings.

Savage 12 FV 1" group at 400m shooting Hornady 75gr Match bullets likes the 77gr bullets as well. Rifle has been restocked with a McMillain A3 stock , Near MFG Scope Base and sports a NF 3.5x15 scope
