Help with choosing my first long-distance rifle?

Mind explaining further why you guys prefer .308 to the 6.5 creed? Generally speaking ammo availability between the 2 is darn near equal these days, and (again, generally speaking) the .308 has more drop, more wind, and more recoil. Whats the upside?

Not bashing, just genuinely curious to the upside of .308 over the 6.5.
I don't own a 6.5 but during covid you could not find the ammo for 6.5 anywhere around locally. 308 you could find easily . That is one of the reasons I've never bought one. Though it seems like all my friends have a 6.5

(Edited, because it's hard keeping track of the price you actually pay for rimfire ammo versus the price you tell your spouse 🤣)
Well good thing I am a single guy!

But that being said I didn't know there would be military ranges open to the public... or at least that's the impression that I got.

I'll definitely be looking into that first before the rifle. Like I said, I am a year out at least before I get the rifle. I intend to pay in cash as a flex.

I picked a 26" heavy barrel savage in .308 in a McMillan stock. I have a viper 4-16x44 I put on it. Price was right and I have a lot to learn before I'll be limited by the rifle. The human is most of the equation if you are in the right ball park.
