Help with Cooey mod.84

I was given a 12ga. Cooey Mod. 84 (30 in. Barrel)this past week-end. Its in decent shape, and was used only to fire crackers(like a bear bangers I am guessing) to scare off the birds from the guys fruit trees.

I want to clean it up, and then refinish the stock. I feel kinda foolish asking this, but is there a trick to getting the barrel off? The forestock came off easy enough, but I cannot get the barrel to un- hook.

Also, is there any way to date these. From reading some other threads I gather its pre 61 since Winchester is not marked on it. It also only has a 3 digit serial number.
 
Barrel removal

Take the fore-end off. Then put one hand on the barrel, and one hand on the pistol grip.

Move the lever to open the action, and move the barrel downward. It should "wiggle" loose.
 
Keep the opening lever full over, in the opening position and it sure should come apart.
I have had a Model 84 410, as well as the newer 840. The older 84 was far better quality, as compared to the newer one.

There is a pin that should be centered in the mechanism on the bottom of the barrel. It's probably came loose and slid to either the left or right. I had a cooey that did this too. If you look really carefully with a good light you'll see which side it's on. Tip it sideways so the long side is up. Rattle the barrel in the action and it'll probably slide down and maybe you can get it apart.
Might be able to insert something really thin in between the barrel and the action and work the pin back to centre.

The bad news is that if the gun had been used to fire cracker shells without being properly cleaned, the barrel is probably pitted as these shells are corrosive, and do their damage over a short period of time.

I can open it all the way to load and extract a shell, I just cannot get it to un hook.

Am going to check out the pin that Tok was speaking about. Is this pin right at the pivot point?

do everything you just did like removing the forarm and opening the barrel all the way but try pushing the barrel back (try pushing/wigling it like your trying to make the exractor hit the firing pin hole WITH the barrel open thats wat happend to my grandfathers
 
does it move back a bit once opened?
there is a pin on the bottom that helps eject spent shell...it has to come through the center.
if you still cant do it post a picture of the action open i may have look at it. should be easy but maybe something has shifted inside and sticking.
and yes. spray it with oil. leave it for a day.
i re did 84 is a cool gun. good luck with it.

Well I finally found the time to work on this shotgun again. You were right on about the pin. I took off the stock and literally soaked this thing in Break free, and sure enough I got the pin to move freely and got it apart. I cannot believe the amount of gunk I removed from the action.

Now for my next question. Now that I have cleaned it up and put back the pin, how do I keep the pin from moving again???? It goes in very loosely.

The inside of the barrel was pretty nasty looking, but after some serious brushing and swabbing its looks new, except for the last three inches which has rust and pitting. I have it soaking right now in break free and will try brushing and cleaning it again. How much will this affect the performance of the gun if I cannot get those last three inches cleaned up ???
 
one of my buddy's has a old single shot that the end is pitted (was found in a basement after one of his relitives passed away. we have never noticed any problems. we just cleaned it up good as we could.
