I'm sure this has been asked many times but I can't find a thread that explains everything in a lot of detail. I want to do some mods to my G17 and was wondering how it would be affected?

How does the connector work? If you replace the connector do you have to replace any springs? How does it affect the trigger pull?

What I'm wondering is how does the pistol change when you replace the springs such as the trigger spring, recoil spring, firing pin spring etc....

I want to put in an extended mag release, extended slide stop and lighten the trigger pull.

Any help would be great. Feel free to explain with engineering/physics terminology.

Thanks,

Scott.

You're right, this question has been asked a lot but I'll save you a couple pages worth of replies, here's what most people will say....
"Save your money and buy ammo!!!"

But yeah, to answer your questions (and someone will hopefully correct me if I'm wrong)
- My understanding is that trigger spring swaps affect your pull "Weight" while connectors affect the trigger "Brake". Changing one doesn't mean you absolutely need to change the other.
- Another neat gizmo is the LWD Ultimate Trigger Stop (link here) which allows you to adjust the trigger over travel ("The amount of rearward movement after the firing pin has been released") I *think* the Ghost Rocket connectors have a similar feature but involve grinding down a tab?
- I don't know about recoil or striker springs...I'm still using the stock plastic one.

The good thing is that parts are all super easy to change on a Glock :D

If you replace the connector, you will decrease the trigger pull by 1-2 lbs depending on which connector you purchase and install. There are a few different brands:
a. Glock 4.5 lb connector
b. Ghost - Several models to choose from.
c. Scherer - Some love them, some hate them
d. LWD (Lone Wolf) - My personal favourite. I just ordered 5 for myself and a group of friends. I have found no bad reviews online
e. Zev-tech - I hear not so good reviews

Changing the trigger spring will have a negligible effect on the trigger pull.

Changing the striker (firing pin) spring will have a much greater direct effect on the trigger pull as this is the spring that is actually compressed by squeezing the trigger. If you install a reduced power striker spring however, you may experience light primer strikes, not usually a problem with factory ammo, but it may become an issue with hard primers.

I'm sorry, I have never explored the effect of replacing the recoil spring with an aftermarket (reduced or increased) power recoil spring...maybe someone else can comment.

I have installed the extended mag release and slide stop lever, and I love the combination. I did however file down (round and smooth) the extended mag release as it did not fit into my glock sport combat holster in stock form. The mag release was $3.00 so I figured if I messed it up, it would not be too expensive to replace and I could always go back to the original if I didn't like it.

The really good thing about Glocks is the parts are cheap and really easy to replace...no gunsmithing required in most cases...and if you don't like the modifications you have done, you can always go back to stock.

This is a link that will give more technical information and will also show how to completely detail strip both the slide and frame.

Personally, I learn by doing so I detail stripped and reassembled using the info on this site as a reference for the first time. The first time took me 25 mins as I studied the operation of all the parts. Now, I can do it in 5 minutes (both the slide and frame)

I also highly recommend doing the 25 cent trigger job. It involves polishing the connector, firing pin safety, trigger bar and the face of the striker that contacts the trigger bar. I used q-tips and flitz as I did not want to go crazy with the dremel. It turned out great, a lot smoother that stock. There are several write-ups available online.
