Hey All,

So I have decided that I am going to give goose hunting a try and I'm looking to buy decoys to get myself set up. I was referred to Canadian Waterfowlers Pro Shop, but looking around the site I am overwhelmed with options. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a brand (and maybe model) of Canada Goose decoy, as well as suggest a number as to how many I would need. I am looking to hunt fields and will probably be alone for the first while doing it, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I would look at 10-15 doz split half and half with full bodies and silos. We used most of the brands, they all have their own problems and they all work.

depends on type of geese you are targeting. Big honkers are more likely to be in smaller flocks and tend to decoy better to lower numbers of decoys. Lesser Canadas and snows like larger numbers of decoys. I have used from one dozen to 15 dozen and all worked. I find the big honkers are harder to bring in and you will need better quality, more realistic decoys but less of them. Start with one or two dozen of the best looking ones you can afford and then add to it over time with less expensive ones.

Thank you for the replies. I certainly cannot afford 10-15 dozen decoys right off the hop if I wish to remain a married man; but I think I should be able to affor a dozen "high end good ones" and a dozen or two "lesser" models. I may not get many geese with my small decoy group; but hey, trying is half the fun eh?

Now to look at goose calls.....

It really depends on the pressure your birds see. Out here on the prairie, less is more when hunting big Canadas.

Two dozen magnum dekes shells with flocked heads (you can even flock them yourself)

six of those on motion sticks (I don't know what they are called, but they raise the decoy off the ground and let them move in the wind)

Six full body with flocked heads (bigfoots are working for me)

over 25 years of success with under 3 dozen dekes for me.

25 year Old decoys that I flocked the head and tails on.

My full bodies I bought a few years ago. Nice addition to the 24 magnums I have.

Take a look at Real Geese silhouettes. 4-6 dozen will fit in any car or truck and go out fast. Even if you decide to go with fullbodies latter, silos are a great way to increase numbers.

i have used bigfoot decoys from my start into goose hunting and i would have a hard time buying anything eles all the guys in my hinting group used to use ghg which look good, but the not as easy ad the bigfoots, look great, easy set up, birds love them
