A friend of mine in the UK has a 1910 Ross and would like some assistance in identifying the butt markings and their significance. I have a photo but like so many others I have yet to work out how to post it! Therefore I have attempted to describe the markings along with my assumptions as to what they might indicate.

CASC - Canadian Army Service Corps?
Quebec - the place of issue?
What is DZ?
Uncertain what the following might be unless they are rack numbers - 48 over 189 or the barred-out 400, 497 over 1914 (the latter being year of issue I assume).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing the DZ follows 497 over 1914 , which would be 497th rifle of DZ run in 1914. The other numbers likely issue markings.
Someone more knowledgable than I shall chime in shortly.
Cheers
Geoff

If the 497 over 1914 is just to the left of the DZ, that is the serial number. The Quebec roundel refers to the place of manufacture. CASC could be Canadian Army Service Corps.
