Help with ID of Chambering

I am trying to identify the chambering of this rifle. SPORTCO made in Australia. Bolt action detatchable box magazine. The calibre is marked:
".22 JAGR" The bore is .22 but the markings seem odd. Is it just a company name for .22 LR? Any ideas? I have not tried chambering a .22 round as this is a very unrelaiable way to check chamber dimensions.

The bolt face should tell you if it is rimfire or not.

There are not a lot of rimfire cartridges.

Try placing a 22LR round in the chamber... if it is a 22LR chamber, the round should fit fairly tight with not much movement sideways if any.

If it fits loose it probably isn't a 22LR.
 
Sportco used to convert surplus military rifles to .22RF, but also made limited runs of new guns. If the bolt is a rimfire bolt, its likly a .22RF, and the rifle name is "Jagr." Possibly a variation of the German word jagger or hunter.
 
Thanks for the input fellas. It is as Skeet Gunner said just a .22 LR named with the German word for hunter. I was able to access a shooting forum in Australia and a kind "bloke" as he called me ID'd the rifle. Again thank you all for your input.

UPDATE! I was misled by the Aussie on the chambering. This round is based on the .22 Hornet and is known as the .22 JGR it was invented by a fellow from western Canada. This fellow also invented a 6X6 ATV known as a JIGGER. He had a shop in Toronto and designed this round in the late fifties. Dominion loaded factory ammo for a while and it was availble in rimmed and rimless configurations. SPORTCO was the only company to produce a rifle in this chambering. Several custom jobs have been made though. Funny just when I thought I knew it all.......

I remember the Jigger.
I DON'T remember the "22JAGR" however!:confused:
Any idea when it was brought out?
I have a collection of all the cartridges thatC.I.L.loaded,shotgun, so will dig into it after I get back home and see if I can find it.

Fascinating! Must be one of those "known unknowns" that Rumsfeld fella was blathering about. I wonder if some oldtimer at Ellwood Epps knows about it?
