Help with Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1

I was recently told that original condition British Enfields are not selling for more than approx. $350, and that is in decent shape.
Long Branches hold their (higher) value and people's interest much more readily.

A rifle in that shape...I think the guy who said not over $100 was close to the mark. And that is if it still has a bore. If the bore is a sewer pipe...

Any more than that...leave it where it's been rusting for 67 years.

It's a 1942 Savage No4 Mk1* you can see the squared S between the s/n & the date

Looks like there is some very heavy corrosion on the charger bridge and back sight. Hard to say since someone just smeared all that Lubriplate all over it.

If the receiver is as corroded as it looks, it's either a weld and refinish job or strip for parts IMO. On the good side, that is the only place on a No.4 where a little welding can be safely done, other than the butt socket.

It was no beauty when it went out to the barn obviously, so I would say it's a parts rifle, a wall hanger, or a full refurb candidate.

Always neat to find something like this, but unfortunately they usually are sow's ears, not silk purses.

Interesting, and a neat find.

Like mentioned, it could be a surprise, in both a good and bad way. I would offer something like 50 bucks for it and take it home, just because it would be interesting to clean it up and see whats underneath, would make a good project to sit down in front of re-runs of your favorite show or movie and have at her. If its salvageable with a decent bore, you have a full wood shooter you can beat up in the bush and not worry about, if its scrap you have either a project, wall hanger, or parts gun. If its a parts gun, the wood and stock bands looks ok and with a little love might turn out decent, and if so you made your money back probably two or three fold right their. The bayo also does not look too bad form the pics so that's probably 20-30 bucks if its decent. Then if the mags decent, thats another 30 bucks at least I would say.

So while my pricing might be off, for fifty bucks you probably cant lose.
