Help with M1A scout optics.

Hey everyone.

I am currently looking into a M1A scout or upgraded norinco with a shortened barrel. It is going to be my main rifle which will be used at the range, but will also be kept as a SHTF rifle. (Can never be to safe :) ) Basically, I want to know what optic you suggest that would be good for close situations as well as up to around 300-400 yards (unless this weapon is capable of more). It is a scout rifle so obviously i dont want any large scopes although I was thinking a red dot, or a low magnification (2.5x?) scope mounted in front of the breech.

I dont want to spend too much money, I just want something that will work effectively enough at close and medium ranges that is hopefully around or under $300. I know this wont get me anything particularly amazing, but let me know what Im looking at in this price range. I was even considering a knock off aimpoint or bushnell holosight but then would need to put a cheek rest on the stock, although thats not a big deal.

On another note, how effective are the iron sights on this gun?

Bushnell Holosight might be what your looking for... It sits low enough Id think for you to get away without a cheek rest.. Not sure though...

Iron sights work really well, even better if you get them milled down to National Match spec. Alot easier to see everything...
 
I've got a 2x Burris on a SA scout mount on my N14.

I have tried holosights. On any thing with a strong recoil they shake loose and don't hold their point of aim. Maybe the bushnell is strong than the NCstar I bought, but I am not sure I would invest the money. A good red dot may be a better choice,

I thought Fabarm focused mainly on shotguns:confused:
and just read about that trirail, bunch of people here love theirs there have been several reviews and from what I read, so far so good
 
For a scout mount scope, you are looking for an IER(Intermediate Eye Relief) scope. Check that any scope you buy is actually an IER scope.
There are only a few models like that. Leupold has only one, the M8-2.5x28mm IER Scout model. Other manufacturers are likely to be limited as well. The Leupold Scout should give excellent results up to 200 to 300 yards.
I think the Ultimak is the best available scope mount. If you can afford it, I would definately recommend it.
The iron sights on an M1A are good, and should give excellent results out to 200 yards if you do your part.
Which M1A do you have? That might affect some of the advise you get here.
If you are think of having an M1A barrel cut down, be aware that if you cut it to 18" it will become a restricted weapon. This can be very annoying.

Cutting to 18" would make it prohib. Installing a newly manufactured 18" barrel would make it restricted.

Lots of people have cut their barrels down to 18.5", but this normally means that you can't remount the stock flash hider, which means that you lose your front sight unless you get a gas lock front sight.

Check out the Leupold 2.5 IER scope that's already been mentioned. Saw one on the EE the other week for $200. I'd have bought it myself but don't have the cash.
