help with max load using 700x for 9mm 125gr LRN

Hey fellas

Since Hogdon took over and a lot of load data has been reduced, I have had trouble searching for lead bullet data for 700x powder.

The current site says max load at 3.4 grains.. I seem to remember much much higher data before ?? Anyone help me out.?

I just loaded 400 rounds 9mm 125gr Lead RN at 3.8-4.0 grains (sh**y powder measuring with 700x!),... my scale was mis-calibrated and I really don't feel like kinetic pulling the whole batch :(

My Hornady 8th edition has no info for 125gn LRN but my Hodgdon 2014 Annual Manual has something for 125gn LCN (lead conical nose). With 700-X, it has a starting load of 2.9gn and a max of 3.4gn.

the problem is that Hogdon seems to have lowered much of the load data when the bought out IMR, for liability reasons perhaps? I need older data by IMR not Hogdon,.. but thanks for trying!

What OAL are you using?
I used 700X for a while with plated bullets, my OAL was 1.12" and I loaded 4.0gr for PF130. With lead you should be fine at 3.6-3.8gr with same or even greater OAL.

Lee Modern Reloading Second edition:
124 Grain Jacketed Bullet IMR 700X 4.3gr 999fps 4.8gr 1110fps 32600CUP 1.135" OAL
nothing for lead
 
Yuo can substitute jacketed load data for cast and as long as your boolit holds up without leading and gas cutting, your pressure will actually be lower than a jacketed bullet due to less friction of the lead boolit. That's assuming the same seating depth as deeper seating increases pressure as well. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot those rounds as long as the boolits fit the bore correctly...otherwise, you're going to have some lead removal to do after.
 
Thanks to all of you for all the help!! I think I try them in my all steel Star 9mm before I shoot them in my MP9 :)

I worry about the sh**ty powder measuring of the 700x as well. I did many random tests and there was nothing over 4.0 grains. As far as OAL.. I just seat them past lube line, then as far as I need so they will chamber in my 2 barrels. I always figured why compress the load and increase pressure if I don't have to?

If the first few rounds cause too much leading I will have to take a night and pull them all. I pray to the gods of Lotto 649 that one day I can have my own range to test my loads on without waiting for the club trip... :)

Thanks again guys for the 'classic' load data.. keep it coming! Anyone ever needs a blueprint or a manual or whatever let me know,.. I am a hoarder of data :)
 
From Sierra Edition V

125gr FMJ or JHP
700x min 3.3gr max 4.7gr

From 'Ken Waters Pet Loads'

125gr cast roundnose
700x 3.5gr normal, 4.0gr max

From Lyman 48th

125gr #2 Alloy
700x 2.8gr suggested start 3.5gr max
 
That load should be ok to shoot. I have gone as high as 4.5 with lead bullets.


But 700X is fast and the flake powdeer does not meter well. Foer that reason I suggest you switch to TiteGroup. It is fast, but meters much better.

I usually use Bullseye for pistol,.. but I had a can of 700x that I thought unlikely I would use any time soon (not too much call to reload shot shells any more at current prices). I spent a day and a half on my turret press doing large batches of .38 spl and 9mm with 700x, and .357 mag with Bullseye. Probably should have spent the time setting up my Dillon 650, but it is set perfectly for .45 acp right now. I will bet that powder measure would have been better than the vintage pos I was using. :) Live and learn.

thanks again to all the helpful folk putting my mind at rest.. Why is the data for 700x so all over the place with min/max loads?
