Hi all,

I may end up taking my muzzle loader out for some big game like moose or elk eventually.

I have a 50 caliber muzzy I normally shoot 200 grain bullets along with 2 triple sevens (100 grain black powder).

I have taken a nice deer with this set up in my muzzle loader. But basically my question is that will the 200 grain bullet and 100 grains of powder be enough stopping force to put either an elk or a moose down in one shot?

I am not great with ballistics. I have only taken the one deer with my muzzy, but from about 100 yards it stopped that deer now.

Let me know what you think.

I personally prefer 250 grain Shockwaves for larger critters but I have seen a few moose fall down very dead from 200 grainers.

Would I be ok with 250 grain and 100 powder or should the powder be upped to 150?

Plus I have never hunted elk but would like to try in my mind elk size and body structure is similar if not a little smaller than a moose...

Thanks for your help so far.

Depends on the range you'll be shooting. Sub 120 yards, I'd say no problem...likely even further.

Elk are definitely smaller than moose.

Sounds great. Now that said I live in rural, rural MB. The only place I can think of to buy 250 grain is WPG or Brandon. I am no where near either. I will be going for moose, but likely taking my 30-06.

If I go for moose this season with my 200 grain shockwaves can I be confident? Would I use my regular 100 grain of powder or should I definitely use 150 grains of black powder.

Thanks.

I haven't had much luck getting the 200 grainers to shoot with 150 grain loads.

I'm guessing you'll be shooting smaller than 200 grain bullets out of your 30-06...lol Hit them right and I can't see an issue.

I use TC shockwave 250s in my triumph behind about 90 grains of Blackhorn 209. Try it out its an accurate combo and zero residue to clean.

You can mail order the Shockwaves from Cabelas, out of Winnipeg. ITs cheap.
