So This Year I got Binoculars, Hunter safety course (Ontario finally :D) and a Handgun Cabinet. So here is my question what to get for a first Handgun. I've narrowed it down to

Chiappa 1911 .22

GSG 1911

Ruger 22/45

I am open to other .22's but I want ones the are easy for newbies to play with as well as my kids will also be learning on these. I'm avoiding a centrefire handgun for a bit till I get a few more guns :) Still need a Shotgun, and a .223 bolt then I'll get the centrefire pistol I had a lot of success going from the .22Lr to the centrefire rifle so I'm going to try the same thing with handguns.
EDIT
Oh if you vote other could you let me know which one. I will admit I am a little worried about the two new ones on the market and do feel free to add others I don't currently have anything saved up so it's going to be a bit before I get there. Also I do like the 1911 in case you guys missed the trend, too much John Wayne as a kid I think. I keep thinking about other guns and keep coming back to the 1911 don't know why.

By far my choice is Ruger. Will last forever, you can hand it down to your kids. I prefer the MkIII in SS but 22/45 is good too.

Chiappa feels cheap, haven't shot one, don't want to.

GSG- Seem to have happy owners, but I don't like the materials they used in it frame and slide. Not sure of it's longevity.

If it's a FIRST handgun, don;t do what I did. I got a .45 first and developed far too many bad habits that I ultimately had to correct. Work on your fundamentals FIRST.

I would look for an older Ruger MkII or MkIII. They are nicer than their newer plastic guns.

Once you've had an experienced handgun shooter teach you how to shoot in the .22, THEN get a bigger gun. I would also NOT get a 1911 as my primary shooter unless I was going to shoot IPSC open. I like the 1911, and a lot of guys will disagree, but if it's your first (and for a time) your only larger bore pistol I would get a modern wonder-9. Take your pick, most of the big names make a good one. The ammo is super cheap, reliability will be fantastic, and the accessories are often easily and cheaply had.

I can recommend, in no order:

-Glock (the 17 is the "go to" 9mm of the Glock world)
-Sig P226
-Beretta 92FS or 90-two
-Springfield XD
-Steyr M9
-CZ75 and clones

I would avoid a Norinco gun as your first larger calibre handgun if you can afford better. The norc guns are great and with a little tinkering are as good as anything else, but they often do need that little bit of initial tinkering or tweaking and experience will make that more intuitive for you.

Cheers.

if it's one you want a long time get a ruger mkIII and an ultimate cliploader

my other choices would be a ruger 22/45 a walther p22 (girlfriend has one perfect grips for young kids or people with small hands took about 1000rnds to break it in to the point of no failures though it can now cycle anything)

my next choice would be a sig220 in .22lr NOT A SIG MOSQUITO with the 22lr 220 you can purchase a kit down the road to convert to .45acp

i know its not on your list, but a glock 17 with a advantage arms 22 cal kit is perfect, it retains the same sights and trigger of the glock, minus the recoil and expense of the 9mm..great to learn fundamentals...i am more accurate with my 22 kit on my glock than with its 9mm....its a bit finnicky when it comes to ammo, but its very reliable when you feed it recommended ammunition. i had mine run 500 rounds of remmingon golden bullets with only one stoppage

Ruger 22/45

I own one and have had many good experiences with it. It comes with the rail for mounting a red dot and is pre-tapped too. I am saving up for the GSG 1911 currently as I have had a chance to shoot one and like it a lot.

I voted for the GSG1911 because it's fun to shoot and I like the look.
Just got a Ruger 22/45RP, looks and feels good and shoots well.
However, I have yet to shoot a .22 that I like as well as my CZ Kadet.

I'm steering away from the conversion kits for now. I'd like to get a .22 dedicated auto-pistol for now and look at a centrefire later on. The 22/45 really seems to be doing well in the poll. I will admit though I am shocked to see how the GSG 1911 is doing .

I know this is gunna be straying from your list, but I would recommend a G17. They are super reliable, shoot straight, don't break down and they are not that expensive. 9mm is cheap to buy and shoot also.

I had a 22/45 slab side many years ago. Sold it 'cause the thin grip didn't fit me. I now own a month old MIII 5.5" bull bbl with over 1000 rnds threw it. It has functioned flawlessly eating all the bulk ammo!
If you can follow instructions the field strip/cleaning procedure (Youtube) isn't as bad as some say.

My vote goes to the Ruger. If you're set on the 22/45 consider the 22/45 RP model.

BTW...the Advantage Arms .22lr Glockk17 conversion sounds interesting but where can you find one? Seems like they're backordered everywhere.....:(

I love my GSG, but I think I love it because I fell in love with 1911s first. A new shooter may not appreciate it the same way. The ruger is more accurate, and although I have had no issues, the ruger is much more time proven than the GSG. I personally find the GSG more fun, I would probably never take a ruger out unless I had a new shooter with me, but it is probably just because I love 1911s.

Good luck in your choice!
