I'm currently "babysitting" a Winchester Model 100 that belongs to my nephew. It has a Williams receiver mounted peep and a Lyman front sight. The front sight is missing the bead, so I would like to replace it for him (with a Marble sight). He will be using this rifle for close range woods deer hunting. I don't hunt myself, but I was thinking one of the new fibre optic beads (like the pic) would be nice.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Or you could go old school and get one of these:

Redfield "Sourdough" or partridge front sight. No longer made, but they turn up once in a while.

fiber optic in low light is the way to go if you can't see your front sight then no meat in the freezer, when I'm bear hunting red dot sight or fiber optic front sight gives me about 45 min to hour extra time in the woods

Once you shoot a Partridge sight you'll never go back. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_sights
All my iron sighted rifles get them, it's not hard to file buckhorn sights in to a partridge sights. Only the old stuf stays the way they came.

I use a brass blade made by Skinner sight on my Model 99F and my model 94BB both have Williams foolproof peeps on the rear. Great visibility in any light a variation of the partridge sight. Order a little taller thsn you need and file to suit your needs. Google Skinner sights.

Be wary of the fiberoptic front sights they are extremely brittle. Williams, marble, tru glo, hi viz dont matter who makes em either the light pipe falls out or one of the brackets that holds the light pipe breaks.

I'm tellin you from actual personal experience from two I tried on my rifle and 4 guys in my hunting gang ( Father, 2 cousins and uncle ) I replaced all ours with marble 1/16th ivory beads and they are tough and just as bright in huntin conditionds.

I'm just tellin you this cause I'd hate for your nephew too walk through brush, pull up on a critter and have no red dot left in his front sight and have too try and make a fast shot.

Trapoholic . . . thanks for that detailed reply, I really appreciate it. I'm going to suggest that my nephew go with the white bead.

No problem brother, that's what this site is for right? You can get bigger beads in ivory, red, or brass from marble if you like, most people would want one with a peep sight but I like bein able to blow both their eyeballs out at 50 yards. I got no problem doggin out and shootin one doin mach 2 with the small front bead peep sights are the best! Plus any bigger than 1/16th I call em loonie sights cause a pop can 10 feet away is completely covered by the front bead, not much good if your tryin too get precise.
