Help with new rifle build

Are you planning to do any competitions of any kind or is this rifle just a long range gun for fun and a little bit of hunting? I just ask because this can make a slight difference on components that may work better than others.

Trigger: Go Triggertech, they make a couple great models and are Canadian
Action: If you can afford it, I would go with a custom action. They're just more refined and you can pick one that has the features you want.

I believe the AICS 1.5 will have the trigger guard included so no need to buy another one.

Weight for hunting is subjective depending on the type of hunting you do and how much you want to carry. I've been carrying my 16 pound match rifle hunting this year and been ok with it. However I only walk a couple miles a day.

The plan currently is to use it for hunting and like you said, a long range gun for fun. I dont plan on competing or anything but way down the road may consider it when more experienced. Just always wanted a rifle in the aics 1.5.

Just out of curiosity, I went to the Berger site, and looked up their 185gr Juggernaut.
With a mv of 2650fps, a 1000m requires 41 minutes of elevation, and 10mph wind drift is 9.4 minutes. Comparable figures for the 155 Scenar are 32.6 and 8.2.
How much velocity can be obtained with the Juggernaut in .308? It is going to require more than 2650 to match the 155.

I'm running the 185 Jugs around 2940 FPS with 44.5 grains of Varget and seated lightly touching the lands at 3.028" OAL.

Keep in mind the throat is long enough for me to do that. You should make sure yours is as well.

I have another barrel that is chambered for the 155 based on the kind of ballistic info you are referring to. The 155 shot well for me out to 800 yards, but accuracy really faded past that. The 185 Jug is much better for 800 to 1000 yards.

The 155 was really nice at 300 and 500 and good at 600. At the ORA match some years ago, I went 50 with 9 Vs at 300 meters with it (1/2 MOA V bull, and the 5 was my first convertible sighter… I didn't even need to take it.), but it just fell apart at long range. Now I just shoot the 185 for F Class.

That is really impressive - 2950 w/185gr bullet and 44.5gr Varget in a .308! That would really sing! How long is your barrel?
You mention shorter range accuracy... One of the US shooters at the DCRA APM suggested using Berger 150 flat base bullets to 500. Really impressive. The bullet essentially has a VLD ogive with a flat base. BR shooters prefer flat based bullets for good reason.

It's a 28 inch barrel. I'd go longer but might go over my weight limit for FTR.

You could try the flat base bullets, I did as well, but I found no advantage to them.

The theory is that with flat base you get more consistent velocity with less blow by, but I never found it to prove meaningful.

Then what, switch ammo for long range? I'd rather just run the same load everywhere. Once you get a feel for it, it can throw you off making the transition.

I don't think you will stay under 1K for the action here. But Go Big Tactical would likely have some actions in stock. A Defiance Tenacity or Bighorn Origin are great value custom actions. I think Tom usually carries both.

When hunting with an AICS stocked rifle, I would recommend a biathlon sling. I have taken an AW into the woods and the biathlon sling is a night and day comparison with a regular sling in terms of carry comfort. TAB Gear makes an nice one.

Also your standard short action AICS pattern mag has an internal space of 2.880ā€ unless you remove the front plates. I shoot Berger 155.5's @ 2930fps out of a 26" barrel with 45.6 grains Varget running a coal of 2.885". I can do this and get dead reliable mag feeding because AW mags are roomier (max 2.980"). If I was working with AICS mags I would choose a bullet in the 175 - 185grain range (as others have already suggested).
