I picked up a used vz58 a few days ago and am looking for info on mounting a scope. I have a side mount that puts a short rail over the dust cover but am wondering if the length might cause issues with eye relief?? If so what other options might there be, is the rear dust cover mount any longer?? Are there extension style rings available that might allow me to adjust the eye relief slightly. I'm looking at a 1-4 or 1-6 scope but haven't settled on the brand yet. I've done a ton of searching on Google so I have some ideas but thought it might be a good idea to check and see what others have done rather than reinventing the wheel.
Thanks Chuck

For short dot sights the rail mount will be good enough. I would be more worried about brass ejecting up and marring your sight/bouncing back into the action and causing a malfunction. Go to kelly's sporting goods.com and order a low side mount there. great shipping from them. I find the regular side mount is absolutely ridiculous as it sits way to high for what it was designed to do.

Thanks Luis1 I had a look at the site you mention and that's the mount I have. I had the same concerns as you with the brass hitting a regular length scope but am hoping one of the short compact scopes in the 1 to 4 or 1 to 6 power might work. Hence my question re around eye relief or perhaps some type of extension ring that would allow the compact scope to be mounted far enough ahead to give me the needed eye relief. If need be I'm sure I can come up with some type of deflector to protect the scope.

Thanks paske I had read that thread before I posted but didn't find the answers I was looking for.

I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Funny thing with that dust cover mount, it did not work with my vz 58. Apparently when vz made these some bolt carriers didn't get made to spec so they just put longer guide rods or what not in the factory dust cover. My railed one causes the bolt to come out of battery 2 mm. And wiggle back and forth. Corwin arms is working with me on it though to get it fixed. I really can't say enough about them, service has been great. I really would like it to work. Gives me a bit more rail space and is lighter to boot.

Yea i have the low profile rail mount that you were looking at, you will have to invest in a Cheek Riser for your stock however, or at least I did, or buy a stock that has one. I use a magpul CTR Stock and need the .75 in Cheek Riser, but that's just me. As well unless up put your nose on the dust cover I have had no problem with eye relief with my vortex PST 1-4x24 short dot in terms of eye relief, I also have a 3 inch offset ring mount though, it does help to be honest. I just didn't want brass chewing up my sight. The vz does violently eject brass unfortunately.

That's weird, my mount from corwin works perfectly on my CSA vz58

Luis try that spring assembly we send you on Thursday. I tried it on both CSA VZ and CZ 858 it is perfect. If this does not help it means bolt main spring whole is bit deeper then needed

I am just waiting for it in the mail lol. Now if the hole is deeper than needed, I guess that means new bolt lol.

Corwin Arms just a couple questions re your dust rail. It sounds like it's a little longer and perhaps lower than the side mount I currently have. Is it the same length as the dust cover and would I need to purchase anything else to make it work on my VZ 58??

Luis thank you for your responses they have been very helpful. I'm leaning towards ordering one of the scope mounts from Corwin Arms.
Thanks Chuck

It is the same length as stock dust cover. It comes ready to install, you will need to switch to the mount your original springs . When we have more spring sets then we offer them with springs installed for extra $22 but at the moment we have no springs on hand. You still can use iron sights with this mount

Thanks for the information. I'm off to the USA until early March so unless the shipping time is less than a week or more than 3 weeks I'll order one when I get back to SK, that way it doesn't sit at the post office. I'm sure I can handle switching the springs over from the original dust cover. Despite this style of firearms being new to me, from what I can see they are no more complicated than the single action revolvers and lever action rifles I'm familiar with from years of Cowboy Action shooting.

I had no desire to own anything tactical related until I read Turdo's comments about getting handguns and assault rifles off the street. That was mid December and since then I've picked up an AR, SKS and now the VZ 58. I wonder what will be next? LOL

Canadian made and hes a deal on this forum!

Thanks paintgunner this looks like a good solution. Lots of room for eye relief plus it would protect the scope from the brass. Does the full length interfere with the ejection of brass?

I haven't had any issues with surplus ammo but shooting brass soft point (hotter rounds) I had a few bounce back and get caught in the bolt.

We have the new version of this rail coming soon.

The machinist will be working on it in 2 or 3 weeks and it should be available in about a month after that.

I will post pics once the machining is completed.

There are still a few of the version in the pic left if you like the look of it. It seems to result in the occasional stovepipe but by and large it works.

My own experience is a failure rate around 1-2%. I wish my VZ was that reliable, lol ...

The new version is an attempt to eliminate the stovepiping entirely and so far it has performed in a boringly successful manner.
