A friend who knows nothing about semiauto guns (he is a good hunter/shooter) just dropped off this shotgun for me to look at. I have completely disassembled it as it was the dirtiest shotgun I have ever seen in person.
It was malfunctioning he told me with 3" shells. (His dads words)This gun was his fathers and it was just given to him. He said his dad most likely never once cleaned it other than an every 10 year barrel cleaning.
Anyhow, when I took it apart I noticed numerous things that look problematic.
1) a partial O-ring fell out when I slid the forearm off.
2) the piston ring and the second ring the piston ring seats into both look to be missing a small piece of metal, and they have a vertical split. (Maybe they come like that, I have never seen a new one to compare it)
The second ring I just mentioned that fits with the piston ring has a groove around the circumference. Does a rubber seal/gasket fit in this groove?? I see a groove in the magazine tube that I think uses an O-ring, bit does the ring use a second one?
3)The follower broke and the spring ejected into the action.
I had a spare mossberg spring and a mossberg S&J DELRIN follower on my parts pile, and they seem to work good so far.
So really, I just need help with where I could find the O-ring(s) and if the piston/ring needs replacement. Were they a continuous metal ring or a metal strip that was bent circular?
Thanks for any insight and help guys. He wants to give this gun to his son. I always try to go out of my way to ensure our youth get every opportunity to shoot and own guns, especially inherited gems from Grandpa to their grandson.
I can send pics of the parts to anyone thats wants to help. Text or email

Yup, thats what I need. Doubt I am gonna find it. Nobody seems to stock it currently. It took me a full can of brake cleaner, half a roll of paper towels, around 200 q-tips, half a can of rem-oil, a compressor to blow out some of the dirt, many swabs soaked in bore cleaner, 3 pads of 0000 steel wool. It looked like someone poured a trowel of black sand/dirt inside the action. All metal surfaces were caked in hardened carbon soot. I literally spent 4 hours carefully disassembling, scrubbing, and cleaning. It looks great but without the piston rings and O-rings, I fear it will still be a jam-o-matic.

Make sure you take the stock off and clean the action spring and follower. O ring is a Viton #21 IIRC

I assume I remove butt pad to access butt bolt? Anything to watch out for such as spring loaded stuff that will come flying out etc once it comes off?
Does it use 2 O-rings or just 1 on the mag tube? I cant find an answer online or on youtube.

One o ring on the tube the split on the ring is normal . A member on the board rthook was selling o rings for $10 a four pack mailed give him a pm . Bullseye Sports also stocks the rings .

.021" viton o rings can be found in numerous places. I ordered a bunch about 10 years ago online for about 60 cents a piece. I change one every year for the heck of it unless I forget.

You won't lose anything when taking off the butt pad or the stock, that comes later. The action spring is in a tube with a follower that extends into the receiver, so there are 4 pieces to lose, the spring, the follower, the spring base that contacts the cross pin, and the cross pin. When you remove the cross pin, the compressed spring and the spring base might fly out since the spring is under compression, so keep your thumb over the end. More likely there is a burr that will prevent the spring from flying out of the tube, and it will take some fiddling to get past it, you can work it past with a small punch, by which time you won't be paying attention, and the spring and its base will go sailing off in different directions across the room. That spring tube needs to be cleaned thoroughly, and replacing the spring isn't a bad idea, they aren't expensive.

Both of the metal rings on the magazine tube are split, and the synthetic "O" ring must be replaced.
