I have a model 721 Remington, chambered in 300 H&H ... it has a internal mag no hinged floor plate ....issue is it will feed the first round in to the chamber ...but if you need to take a second shot it will not pick up the second round and jambs up ...is it a week mag spring or what ...it’s really pissing me off ....can’t figure out what it is ...

That all said if it can’t be fixed can i swap the barrel out to a long action model 700 I really like the 300H&H and would like to keep shooting it

RC no the screw count is 3 the blind mag has no hole for a screw ....it apears that the second round is on the in side of the mag stack and the bolt cant catch the bullet on the rear and contacts it first part way up the case

a few pics to help out ...the mag box seems to be the same as a newer m700 just held in under tension to the stock the piect the catrige sits on in the mag ..seems to be light in the back side ...not enough presure holding it up ........???did some one in years past change out the spring ??and put the new one in wrong ??

Does it happen only after you fire it, or anytime you run a magazine full of shells through it?
Try loading the magazine, but close the bolt on an empty chamber, draw the bolt back s-l-o-w-l-y, and try to see where it's hanging up. You could also try pushing the rounds down into the mag, and let them slowly come up under thumb pressure. It might be a weak spring, but I'm thinking there's a burr or sharp edge on that side that the round's hanging up on, probably where the magazine box meets the action.

pic # 1 & 3 showes that its an 721 ...no floor plate.....top load and top unload

it does it all the time ...going slow it apears that the shell next in line sits too low in the rear for the bolt to pick up the shell and you get contact 1/3 to 1/2 way up the next shell( as in pic 5 ) your trying to load ...thats why i am thinking spring is weak ....

I polished the edges on the mag box and the action ....i couldent find any burs or places for the cases to hand up on ...did the thumb push ...just seams to be no or light presure to the rear of the mag

and yes its a 721

Well I was in the process of ordering a new spring … when the parts guy mentioned that these older higher recoil rifles are prone to the follower spring working their way forward ,,, and you can see in pic 1,, mine is all the way forward ,,, a closer look you can see where it had moved mm. by mm. over the years and had wear marks on the spring ,,,a few whacks on a flat screw driver with a hammer in the fold of the spring put the spring back between the rear tabs on the follower and spring pressure at the rear of the mag ..and a few more on the front tabs to peen them so it wont slide again …..works like a hot dam …….. for those interested it was made in feb 1957

thanks for the help

If you load only one round into the mag and the bolt won't pick it up and feed it into the chamber then the mag spring is definitely suspect.
