Help with Remington 700 choices.

I am currently suck between a few different Remington 700s. First off let me say I KNOW there are people who perfer a hinged floor plate over a magazine...I perfer a magazine if possible and I know the pros and cons of both.

Now onto my choices....

R700 SPS Tactical in .223Rem - 20" bull barrel if anyone didn't know
R700 SPS (or SPS DM for about $40 more) in .233Rem OR .243Win for deer
R700 SPS Varmit and in either .223Rem or .243Win

All are very close in price.

Thoughts?

What do you intend to do with the rifle? As a younger shooter, money is likely an issue, and .223 is MUCH more economical and likely a better choice.


EDIT: Number one would be MY choice between the three, given what I currently have in the safe, and my wants.
 
I have an SPS Stainless in .223 and it works nicely on groundhogs and coyotes. Haven't taken a shot over 250 yards so I can't vouch for it's long range accuracy and power.
 
.223 would be perfect for you and it's much cheaper then .243 and if you start reloading, there is plenty of different bullet avaible
 
I'm a huge fan of the SPSDM 243's, but for the hunting you described a 223 would be fine, and more econimical. 243's and gophers is expensive and the barrel get pretty hot.

The only thing to keep in mind is hunting with a heavy barrel isn't the best. My opinion only, but I hate packing a heavy barreled gun around. They belong at the range on the bench.

As far as mags go, there are lots of after market mag conversions for those short actions that are pretty good if you don't like the floor plate. They aren't cheap though. I hunt the small stuff with a BDL 22-250 with the HS precision mags system with 10 round mags. Works excellent.

Before I got my dies I shot American Eagle .223 50gr FBHP through my savage. It shot an inch at 100 with some groups going slightly under. It cost me $13 bucks a box.

.243 is $33 for federal premium and $17.99 for federal blue box similar prices for other brands. On average looking through my book expect to pay about $7-$10 a box more for .243 when buying the same brand and type.

Good to know, thanks! I am liking .223Rem ALOT more now:p
 
I'm assuming no matter what you do you're going to want to reload, so, I don't think cost of 243 is really an issue.

What is an issue is that if you were to consider .243 so that you can step up to deer, you'll be sacrificing barrel life if you do a lot of target shooting at the same time.

Get the .223, and plan to use it as a target/yote gun.
Buy a deer rifle when the time comes. Then you have a play gun and a food on the table gun. You can also get that deer rifle with a nice wood stock then too.

Everybody always says that wood stocks are nicer, I personnally think they are kinda ugly.

What would the round count be for the barrel life for a .223Rem and a ..243Win? And +1 for wood...I like it for "hunting" guns
