Hello Gentlemen!
I'm in the process of restoring a 1970s sxs shotgun and I'm working on the action right now. I'm not sure what type of material it is or how I can clean it up. It looks like some sort of cast (the interior portion is very rough and looks like cast steel, very rough texture).
There seems to be a dark reddish/brown powder residue (looks a lot like rust powder) all over the flat springs and the surrounding area, but the springs themselves are not rusted at all. I'm not entirely sure where this oxidation comes from.
What do you guys recommend to clean this in side and out and get it nice and shiny again. One thing I want to avoid is ruining the somewhat faded engravings.
