Help with restoring a shotgun

Hello Gentlemen!

I'm in the process of restoring a 1970s sxs shotgun and I'm working on the action right now. I'm not sure what type of material it is or how I can clean it up. It looks like some sort of cast (the interior portion is very rough and looks like cast steel, very rough texture).

There seems to be a dark reddish/brown powder residue (looks a lot like rust powder) all over the flat springs and the surrounding area, but the springs themselves are not rusted at all. I'm not entirely sure where this oxidation comes from.

What do you guys recommend to clean this in side and out and get it nice and shiny again. One thing I want to avoid is ruining the somewhat faded engravings.

Uhhh, we're "Black & Green" shotgun fans on this thread. We like your shotgun, but we would be all about
putting a hand carved pistol grip on it, and Cerakoting it black (or green). Porting the SxS barrel would rock! ;-)
 
Looks close to an El Faisan shotgun I used to have. My receiver looked like it was sand casted metal inside and not machined from a solid piece. Had very heavy triggers, no safety. If you grind or polish the internals, go carefully, it may be plated (chromed)metal.
 
Sorry guys, you're absolutely right I posted in the wrong forum. Would a mod be so kind to move it to the other forum?

M77, you're absolutely right, it's an El Faisan. I was thinking of soaking it in some rust remover, then finish it up with some CLP.
 
Just use 0000 steel wool and some clp and polish the rust off.
Also, if the springs have rust you may want to consider replacing them, even the smallest amount of pitting would weaken them and effect life span and strength.
