This is a cheap rifle, based on the Savage 410 pump, I believe.

I tried to load the magazine and the round popped out of the mag and into the action, jamming the gun. I had to take the magazine apart so that the round could fall out the front.

What is the procedure to load the mag? For example, should the bolt be open or closed?

OK, it is a Model 170.
These do not have a stellar reputation for reliability.
Does the shell stop system appear to be functional?

If it's the model 170 I owned one. There is a small plastic piece at the end of the tube mag that likes to become brittle and break. Don't know what it's called. I wound up turning a new one out of aluminum on the lathe. I little file work and it fit up and worked. Solved the problem.

A friend of mine had one in 35 Rem with the same problem . Like you , I made a cartridge stop ( that's what it's called ) and fitted it up . It's worked well ever since . As Tiriaq says though , they are a bit twitchy when it comes to reliability .

Yes. M170 Pump.

The little plastic round thing sits on the spring. I would call it a follower.

I am suspicious of the little tab that holds the round back, and then releases it from the mag at the right time.

I am asking if there is a trick on loading it? Or is any problem I have just because the gun is wonky. If the latter, I can shoot it as a single shot until maybe getting it repaired.

No, no tricks to loading. And not the follower. This is actually the little piece against the action that the tube mag fits into. Just a little round plastic piece with a notch in it. Chances are that it's either worn or cracked/broken. When mine broke I had the same issue you're having.

I would believe it would be the cartridge stop as well.
I did have a 170 in 30-30, great rifle. I found that you had to work the action hard. Slide back and forward with firm movements. If you did not cartridges did not load right.
I moved mine along because I found it heavy for dogging and stuck with the 94.
I have never seen on in 35 Remington but that would be a nice.

Hope you solve the issue Ganderite.

OK, the little piece on the side that I assume releases the cartridge into the action. I see it. Did not know it was plastic. If that part is broken/worn it would explain the problem I am having.

I will shoot it as a single shot, and see if I can locate that part. Do they exist?

Do they exist? Nope. Not that I could ever find. Tried Western Gun Parts and they didn't have one at the time, and they're my normal go to for small obscure parts. Couldn't find one anyplace that I tried. Finally wound up making one out of aluminum. If you take it out you might be able to get one made at a local welding/machine shop.

Is that part called a "shell stop" I found it for sale. This is the picture.

That’s not the part that broke on mine. If you go to the Numrich gun parts exploded view it was part number 34, which they call a: MAGAZINE TUBE ADAPTOR, PLASTIC And they sell them for $2.75 - just don’t know if they ship up here. So it’s not really called a shell stop, but with it broken for some reason, the cartridges won’t stay in the Mag or load properly on mine

Numrich has then for $3.00 I will buy some.

I don't see how this is a mechanical part that lets rounds pop into the action.

I'm not sure either, but I know when it cracked/broke on mine the rounds would not stay in the mag tube properly, and it kept double-feeding/stove-piping rounds.
