Help with Savage 1899 ID

Thanks for posting the letter:)
Very interesting.

Don't mean to be condisending (whatever that means, I can't even spell it)
but what did the letter tell you except shipping info that you didn't already know??

I understand you do Winchesters to verify certain "special features" for rifle value but unless a 1899 has special features you want to verify as factory, of what value is the letter?

No, they stopped making the B's and C's after 175,000 but thats not the point, the point I'm making is that it could have model 85746 on it but you can't call it a model A,B, or C back then because they weren't designated by Savage till 1922. Yet we do call them A's B's and C's because it's easier to know what were talking about if were using Murrays.

My point exactly but you don't just limit your identification by date!
I'm sure there were some models made earlier that were dated later & vis-versa because they were made on a dif line or even in a diff portion of the shop! Therefore I stand by my claim you should identify by what's marked on the gun FIRST!

Let's try a little experiment!

Not to much but thats what I wanted to know.

Now if you would spend the $25 on your 22 H.P. you'd know for sure if it was an 1899H or a 99F cause it would say so, these come right from the factory not from Murray.

Well my inclination is to call it a 99-F ??
It fits in the serial range..it's not marked "Model 99"
but it's also NOT marked 1899 either:)
All have the grooved trigger!

I was sure I had an old 1899F, but our resident Savage guy (Mad Dog, who else?) tells me it ain't so. Anyone know what I have?
Straight grip, 22" tapered, lightweight barrel, Schnabel forend, "D" on lever boss, grooved trigger, takedown, slightly curved steel buttplate with horizontal grooves and Savage logo at the bottom. It's marked "Savage 1899 Model" on the forward ring of the receiver. Serial number 2447XX, which, according to Savage99.com, makes year of manufacture 1923. Chambered in .250-3000.
Anyone know for certain?

No-one knows for certain :D
We only have our opinions!

You gun is identical to one of mine.
Mine opinion still is if it's says it's a "Model 1899" that's what I'd call it!
It appears this particular variation 250 is reasonably common & I believe Murray left it out of his book!

I thin that what you have is a Model 99 F(Early Model) The1899 that you had thought this would be could only be an H, but there were no H's in 250-3000. Transition guns are a pain in the ass, I have one. I had to get it lettered to find out for sure. But the picture with the stith scope is a 99F that has 1899 on the reviever also, but it is a 99 F, as per the Savagae Historian. Les

Pre-mil and post-mil rifles is where a big change was made to the 99's.

The pre-mils are more sought after rifles, they had the lever safety on them and the post-mils had the tang safety. "Pre-one million" 308's. 243's and 358's are much harder to find than the "post one million" as these were the years Savage first started to offer these calibers. Also the pre-mils would have been cut checkered and most of the post-mils had impressed checkering.

Still looking for a model 99R in 300 Savage if anyone has one out there they wanna sell.

Ya, they're easy to find on your side of the border Les, seems like the 300 Savages are all over there and I've got most of the 1895's and MHG's over here!

Haha!!!!;) :D

I know, :( geez, the only nice MHG's i find are about 3000 grand. and I can find the R's for about 4-600. Matter of fact, I have one on layaway down in Texas:D . Yeah I know it is just a 300, it's hell finding my 303's. :) I will eventually. Les
