Hello everyone,

I need some help. I've decided to get into some long range shooting and know next to nothing about the sport. I just bought a Remington 700P LTR .308 and need to get a scope for it. I've been doing some research online and have decided on either a Leupold Mark 4 or a Nightforce Scope. I think the Leupold is slightly less pricey so that will be a consideration. What do you guys recommend?

The best you can afford. I use a nightforce on my 308 and am very happy with it. Money is a little tight right now for me so to shoot my new rifle I am looking for something cheaper like leupold vx3 or sightron. I was going to wait until I could get another nightforce on it but may have to wait until fall or even next spring to do that. I dont want to wait that long.

If you compare an illuminated MK4 with a NF of similar magnification, the prices are within a couple of dollars.
The major advantage NF offers is the number of reticle options and the fact they they offer their reticles and turrets in the same unit of measure.
Why Leupold continues to put Mil reticles in scopes that only come equipped with 1/4 moa turrets eludes me. This complicates comeups considerably more than is necessary, which for someone learning the art of long range is just 1 more thing to deal with, that you really should not have to.
Personally I really like NFs zero stop option as it eliminates yet 1 more thing to have to remember, granted for the extra $$ for the zero stop option a guy with a decent memory does not NEED it.:redface:

Either way get the best optics you can afford as the buying once of an expensive optic is less expensive than buying twice when you find out the less expensive optic is outgrown.

Sightron, Vortex and Weaver all make decent high magnification tactical scopes for about the same $$ as the VX3.

I don't know about most people on here but if money wasn't an issue this would be my top 3 picks;
  1. Schmidt & Bender 5-25 x 56 Police Marksman II LP
  2. Zeiss Victory FL Diavari 6-24x56 T*FL
  3. Swarovski 2.5-15x56 Z6
But since money is an issue I'll just be happy with 1 of these for now;
  1. Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP
  2. Sightron 10-50x60 SIII
  3. Nightforce 5.5-22 x 56 NXS (Might have to sell a kidney & a lung)

earlier this year I bought a NF NXS 8x32x56 and I am extremely happy with it. To my eyes the glass is better than Leupold but I do believe there is a lot of subjectivity re this issue so others may have different experiences.

As a new long range shooter though you may wish to start off with something less expensive (in case your tastes change ) and consider something like a Sightron or (my personal recommendation ) an Elite 4200 6x24x50 (limited internal adjustment but no problem with a 20MOA rail ).

I am gearing up for f-class as well. I went with a bushnell elite 4200 6-24. I paid 460 shipped for mine used. In my opinion it is enough scope to try f-class. I intend to see what other shooters are using on thier rigs and take a peek through their scopes. I should be able to get most of what I paid for out of the bushnell elite 4200 if I do decide to swap it.
