Was wondering what is the major cause of this problem I had today. Was sighting in a new rifle. Shooting at 200 yards. My vertical is lined up very tight maybe 1 inch or so, however my horizontal is quite wide maybe 5-7 inches or so. There was alot of cross wind today, was shooting .223, however does this side to side movement indicate anything in particular being off?

What sort of things should I check mechanically? Or is it shooter error on my part?

First thing you should always check is your scope mount/rings.................make sure they are tight................cross wind may have played a big part.........

Check your mounts and then go out on a less windy day and see what the result is...........

I was shooting 55 grain, you think it was maybe to light for the wind? I sort of didnt think at 200 the crosswind would be such a factor. Ill recheck the scope mount, its a Larue 1 piece with a 30mm tube.

is the barrel floated... not touch anything when it recoils?

Yeah its free floated. Its 18 inch Lothar Walther barrel, its suppose to be pretty accurate. I have maybe 75 rounds through it right now. Its a .223 Wylde with a 1:8 twist.

Last fall I was shooting a 6.5x55 at 200yds in a strong cross wind and had 7-8" of drift. I can easily believe that a gusty crosswind would produce 5+" of drift with 55gr bullets.

any possibilities I could be somehow butchering it when shooting? There isnt a NRA type chart for rifles is there? Similar to what they have with the pie chart for handguns? The trigger is a 2 stage and fairly smooth. Was using a bipod and a monopod.

yeah I only had two types with me today, American Eagle and Win White box, both in 55. I thought I brought the 62s with me, but forgot that like I forgot my trigger lock keys...at least I brought a screwdriver....:p

Don't waste your time with 55 gr bullets in a 1:8 with a Wylde chamber. Get some 69, 75 or 80 grain bullets and start handloading. And yes 55's will blow all over at 200 yards.

Next time you shoot make sure you have some flags setup so that you can see the wind changes and see if you can tighten it up without trying to blindly shoot through it.

a quick run on JBM....

A 55grain .224 bullet with a 30km cross wind will deviate up to 12" (6MOA) at 200 yards. If you are having inconsistent wind, 0- 30km (30 is rather light), you will be all over the board on a horizontal plane

Guys with the twist rate and chamber in mind can you recommend me some factory rounds to try? I will probably have to mail order them so I will need to get a few. Want to get something with a safe choice. I imagine I would want to stay with a FMJ for feed issues?

Any good brands I should look at? Any good places to buy them?

Out my way its mostly 55 and 62 crap. THanks for the help.

USP look through my post I think it was about .223 ammo or my post about my Savage 10 Precision Carbine (both here in the Precision section). Mysticplayer commented about some perfect factory ammo for a 1 in 9 twist, I just can't remember the name right now.

EDIT: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=497790

There is talk here of what .223 to use. As for a place to get it, Im not sure yet.
