help with Steyr scout accuracy

I own the Scout Steyr in

All 3 are MOA or better with factory load, you get there with trial and error, then you will find a load that is will be just perfect.

For peoples that own the Scout Steyr 308, my load of choice is Nosler 165 gr Accubond, those are sub MOA in my 308.

Kinda surprised with the popular 6.5 calibers these days that they don't offer a few other chamberings, though I guess a scout isn't necessarily designed for mid/long range shooting as much as quick to shoulder/shoot and easy to carry.

I do believe the scout is offered in 6.5 creedmoor
 
- Sandbag the rear of the buttstock (under the back 1/3 if that makes sense)

- shoot at a relaxed pace (around a shot every 20-30 seconds)

- shoot 3 round groups

- try a conventional in the 3-9/4-12 range to eliminate lack of magnification as a factor (I know it wasn't in Cooper's specs)

- try several different types of ammo (mine shoots W-W 150 Power Point and Federal Premium 165 TBBC to the same POA and group, well under an inch - I get about 1.5 consistently with 147 gr MEN German surplus at essentially the same POA)

- try your optic in the conventional position - I use a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x20 due to eye issues (I can shoot the 2.5x LER well but not quickly)...
 
Try 3 premium types of ammo, in varying weights and use all the normal procedures you would for ranging in a rifle. (Slow repeat shot / sandbag / action torqued etc.)

If you still have a problem after using that approach, I would change out optics and mounts, and try again. If you still have a problem after that, then have a good gunsmith look at it and hope there is a remedy.

I have a Sako which was exactly the same, until I found a round it liked, which just happened to be an expensive one!

I have a couple buddies with the first gen Steyr Scout, both in 308. One is a great shooter, giving sub MOA with almost every shelf load we put through it. The other is a 3 inch gun no matter what we tried, including some careful reloads. I have heard a few similar tales of inconsistent accuracy from the first gen rifles.

I have a 3-18 ready for my next outing, will also try other ammo types. Had a big POI shift with 180gr but did not notice any between 150 sst and 168 SMK
 
If you're shooting off the Steyr's bi-pod, try putting a soft layer like a pair of gloves or a towel between the bi-pod feet and the bench top. If you are using a conventional scope rather than a scout scope, try putting downward pressure on the top of the scope with your support hand. If the legs of the bi-pod are too high for your seated height at the bench, it may cause parallax issues. Be sure you have no shadowing on your sight picture.
 
Went out friday with a vortex 3-18 and I was able to shoot a mix of 3 round and 5 round groups with an average of 1.02 MOA using FGM 168. If I remove the 5 round groups it is around 0.85.

Turns out the leupold 2.5 LER scout scope and the 1.5-4.5 I was using both had really thick duplex reticle so I guess that it why I had a hard time grouping under 2. Not that it matters so much but I am glad I found the solution !

Was also impressed with offhand shots with the bipod.
