The shooting of a bull elk near Gold River on the west coast of Vancouver Island has led to charges against two men.

Nootka Sound RCMP and the B.C. Conservation Officer Service responded Monday to a report that a bull elk had been shot and left beside a logging road near Gold River, said RCMP Const. Ryan Walker.

The animal was intact, with no parts removed.

Police said they conducted a traffic stop after receiving a detailed description of a vehicle seen leaving the isolated area where the animal had been found.

Xiao Wu, 34, and Song Zhan, 51, face seven charges, including careless use of a firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm and unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm.

The men have been released from custody on strict conditions. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 15, 2016.

Walker said the investigation continues and additional charges under the Wildlife Act are anticipated.

Once the government collects a 4 or 5 digit fine, I think you should be gifted a reward of 2 or 3%.

I'm sure I speak for us all involved, but none of us did it for any sort of recognition, or payday. We all love hunting, and conservation, and respect the laws in regards to poaching. It is completely unexceptable to poach animals. It only ruins it for the rest of us. I was glad to lend a hand, and would do it again anytime.

Good job catching them for sure... But I have to say some of you guys on this thread sound like true rednecks!

What difference does it make whether they were Asian, native, or white? They were poachers, end of story.

Send them back where they came from?! Funny sentiment, but extremely stupid.

Get a grip guys!

Problem is even if they get a big fine and lose their hunting licenses .. they only have to go to the next Province and carry on. The BCWF and others have been pushing for this to change, if you have your hunting privileges revoked, that should be for all of Canada , not jus the Province where the offense took place.
