Helpful hints to DIY for Red Rifles

Easiest way I found for 5 round strippers was to just use bolt cutters. Mark the middle, then simply cut with bolt cutters. It crimps the ends for you, in fact, you might even have to open them up a bit to get all 5 rounds in.

What ever you do, don't use a brand new pair of Wiss yellow handle tin snips. I destroyed them in one snip.

I squared off the port on my scoped SKS, Brass no longer hits the scope.

If you are going to use stripper clips, you can use a file to widen up the clip guide on the rifle so that the clip is not such a precision fit. It helps if you are shooting and reloading against the clock.

Just to bump this again this year ;) - I just use electrical tape to block off half of the clip. Maybe someday we'll be able to use 10 round^0^. I use different colors for FMJ, HP, SP. I was lucky to buy several packs of the Czech ammo on clips from CanTire a few years ago so I haven't had to buy NCstar clips which I hear are 'iffy'. I have about 15 or so. and 1k of ammo left. Wish the Cz was available, but no one out here in Maritimes seems to have any left. And polishing the sear engagement face and rails made a big difference; I didn't mod the hammer spring since i shoot lots of Milsurp but replaced the sear spring with Mcarbo. They have one that causes the mag release to be too soft and drops the mag often. I wrote them about that and they sent me a 'medium' weight spring that keeps the mag closed ;) Finally, I painted the front and rear sights with Whhite paint, then applied Yellow Hi-liter to make them stand out better. Helps for now but I plan to go Tech-site sometime.

Another mod that's simpler that cutting the Sear / Mag release spring is to get them from Mcarbo in Fla. Total cost is about $20 CDN with shipping via USPS and they come in about 2-weeks. They send 2 springs - one for milsurp and one for lighter loads - the light spring caused my mag to drop open almost every shot !!
I did the Gas Tube drilling mod and the ejection mod last month. I made the 2 side holes 5/64 as suggested but did the Upper one at 5/32 and still functions OK with Milsurp. The ejection is now only around 8 - 10 feet at about 2 o'clock due to the Port mod. I cut back the Port about 1 cm more than original - the opening is now 70 mm. I don't know if any more will bring it closer to 3 O'clock - anyone??:confused: I haven't polished or blued the opening in case I want to go wider.
Also instead of the original sling, I use a shoulder strap from a notebook case, it has a padded area - I get them at SallyAnn for $5 then sell the cases at Yard sales.:p
Here's a link to a YT vid of the ejection port mod : http s://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s29GANdiD_8

About chargers.
Because we can only load 5 rounds. The technique is to use a ten round charger and only five will will run into the mag. You will still have 5 in the charger for the next reload.

Ian, That works but I often had #6 'fall out' of the clip. I now have most of my clips loaded with 5 then wrapped with electrical tape, making a handle of sorts. I use diff colours for FMJ, HP, SP and carry them ammo-down in a small sized camera pouch getting 6-8 clips in the pouch. I also have a medium size pouch that I can stuff 6x Tapco mags into with4x 20-pks at the bottom and a 'modified drop free' OEM mag on a side-pouch. "Just my camera stuff, occifer." ;-)
