Helping me choose a 6.5x55 rifle

1) Military surplus. Not great accuracy but you can find them. I have one but it is not good enough.

Wow I wish everyone believed this. Be nice to see the swedes get even cheaper so I could give em away as xmas presents to the folks I care about. Even if your 1000 bucks could get a thou tighter group then my 200 bucks I don't think the results will ever show up while hunting.

Amen to that David. I'd put money on my Swede against pretty well any of the designer short magnums on the market. If someone has problems with accuracy it's probably because they either can't shoot well or they have a worn out barrel on the rifle.

I'll share my experience with the 6.5. I have an AG-42B and my god can that thing shoot. For a semi-auto milsurp it is exceptionally accurate. Consistantly 1-1.5MOA, with the smallest groups around 0.75MOA. Groups are half the size than my SVT-40 or the several garands I've shot.

I concur about the 6.5 X 55 as a great all around caliber. I own a sporterized M96 that I bought on the EE for $250. It shoots MOA with my handloads, with no bedding or anything done to it. You can find them on the EE or get them from TradeEx. A competent gunsmith can drill and tap them for a scope. Only issue is that some filing of the corner of the rear Weaver base, and use of high scope rings might be necessary to allow clearance for the bolt handle.

The 6.5x55 is one of those rounds that can go hunting and compete in short/long range matches very successfully. If I had to choose one caliber it's the 6.5x55. It does everything well with moderate recoil and a high degree of accuracy.
