Hi I'm just got my first 45-70, it's a Henry H010. Just wondering if anyone has a good load recipe for a 405grain lead bullet. I am looking for a mid range target/hunting load. I'm not sure what powder I should go with, and my Lyman guide says for Whinchester/Marlyn only.
Thanks

I would suggest you contact the manufacturer to determine whether your rifle can handle Marlin lever action loads. It probably can, but I do not know that for a fact. Most of the time, 45-70 loads are based upon any of the following powders: RL-7, H4198, IMR4198 Or H322. Stay away from loads meant for Ruger #1 rifles, as your rifle is likely not built to handle those pressures.

Would be nice if Henry would clarify this issue. This site says they are up to it https://www.americanhunter.org/articles/2014/12/1/hardware-henry-model-h010/

Unless your going to be using Gas Checked bullets the data in your Lyman's manual is all you need. Use the Trap-Door data, in my Lyman's 50th it's at the top of page 354. Faster you go without gas checks more you risk leading your barrel. Lowers accuracy and a pain to clean.

I emailed Henry. The response was that they do not recomened reloading but there rifle will handle any 45 70 factory ammo except any ammo made for the Ruger #1.
