My GF bought a 45 mares leg and its time to do some reloading for it. According to my hornady manual, there's 3 different areas for 45 LC, pistol, rifle, and TC/ruger with a 10" barrel. I bought 300 gr bullets(the only ones listed) and lil gun powder but before I start loading I want to make sure I'm safe with loading this. I figured since the rifle is new production with a 12" barrel the TC/ruger chart is closest that what I would use. Any ideas? This will be a holstered protection gun for horseback and the 44 wasn't an option when she bought it. Thank you for your time. Aaron

Linebaugh used to sell a pamphlet detailing loads for his five shot conversions and stock Ruger New Model's. He also included his favorite loads for his wife, which were just heavy bullets loaded to standard, as in safe for all, .45's. He closed that section by saying that he had never observed any difference in how quickly game succumbed to being shot by hot .45 loads, or just nice big, slow 300 grain slugs, rumbling along and through whatever they hit.
Which is to say the .45 Colt with 300 grain bullets just does not need to be stoked. I would be as happy as a revolver cartridge could make me with a standard pressure 300 grain cartridge. About one tenth as happy as I would be with either pepper spray or a 12 ga and slugs, but as happy as any revolver cartridge would make me.

That's what I was thinking. I was wondering if because this is a modern rifle, if it would be safe to fire with these loads. There is only 2 loads listed in the 45 colt rifle section and these will be lighter due to the possible age of the rifles available for that caliber. I'm not planning to go as hot as possible, just figured it would be better then buying the factory loads for it.
She is about 120 pounds and I want to keep this as good as possible for what we have. She really likes the rifle. A 12 guage is out of the question. I might source out a normal butstock for it too.
Do you know where I could find more loading data for the 300 gr?
