Hi I am looking to buy a new Lever rifle, I am gonna hunt with it, my choices are. 44, .45, 357, or 30-30. I don't shoot handguns so the only caliber I am familiar with is the 30-30 which I do like.......I could do internet research on the other 3 choices but I would rather real world answers. Thanks in advance!

Can't go wrong with 30-30, is there a reason you're looking at only the Henry?

I have a Henry .22, though, it's a wonderful gun, loading them from the end of the tube kind of sucks..

Marlin makes a damn nice 336W for around $500.

If you are interested in opinions, I would look for a nice pre 64 94 on EE and then you have a real lever gun that will appreciate as you use it. There is always some on there and some in very fine condition and all for less money than a new Henry. .32 Special is another good hunting cartridge and is quite common in the pre 64 94s. I've had no issue getting ammo for the 32 as Rem is still making it new, I just picked up 5 boxes a month or so ago. IMHO

As far as the dual purpose handgun cartidges go I personally would never hunt with one, with the exception of cougars behind dogs where shots are more likely to be 50 ft rather than 50 yds.

the rack and pinion of a henry (no idea but its exceptionaly smooth )has a feel like no other lever i have ever tried.i own wins' and Marlins (not marlintons) and niether is even close.
i would consider the henry in 45/70 .will do anything you need it to out to 250-300 yrds with lever evolution and stop anything on this contenent effortlessly.

I have owned a really nice 336 marlin and sold it, bad,bad mistake. Then bought a new Marlington 30-30 bad, bad mistake. I want another lever and have never heard anything bad about the Henry's, and they are more affordable than the Winchester........45/70 is a good idea though Broadhead, thanks.

No doubt, my Henry .22 is awesome, the action is butter smooth..

But that pre-marlington 45-70 guide gun sitting next to it in the safe, well, that's a whole other level..
