I had an opportunity to take this to my club for the first time yesterday afternoon, after church. It was a frantic time throwing all my gear into my bags and ammo box together so I can get to the club in time to have sufficient time to shoot some of the new purchases.
My Supreme came in 300 BLK and included a 10 round (pinned to 5) Magpul PMAG that was labelled for 5.56/.223. In a rush, I also grabbed a 5/30 PMAG G2 and G3 and a LAR15, as well as an MFT 5/10 as well.
Rounds used with S&B .300 BLK/AAC 124gr and 147gr FMJ.
A few things I noticed with using the above.
1. There was an absolute CONSISTENT issue with feeding occasional rounds from the mag. The lever would get stuck on the coming back / pulling back part and required quick forward action and backward action to feed. Occasional ejection issues as well. I thought it was me (I don't baby my levers, I operate them fairly concisely and quickly). So it turns out that the issue across the board was some slight play in the magazine while seated
2. The mag release / ejection mechanism seems wonky - very few mags dropped free. I wish it was pull towards you rather than push out, and it would have been nice to have an AR-style mag release button instead of that wonky horizontal switch. Sometimes I had to use both hands to get the magazine out.
3. I am going to get a rail for this (think it was Weaver 63) and add a red dot - in my view, and I let my range buddy try it too and this was his view) - the onboard sites were low, and you really had to mash your cheek to get a good weld. But regardless...
4. The rifle was decent enough off the bench that I was able to hit paper a lot better than some of the other guns I have.
5. The rifle is light and comfortable to shoot. It is also short enough to fit in my medium sized gun bag, so I don't have to haul the bigger one around.
6. I do like the fact that because this is detachable mag fed and I can see the chamber, I can throw a chamber flag into it when the RSO calls the line and inspects.
So what I am wondering about are the magazines...it seems like a universal consensus that you can use 5.56/.223 magazines to shoot 300 Blackout, BUT I have also seen dedicated/specific .300 BLK magazines.
I wonder whether that was part of the above issue - it looks like it can get corrected by just holding the magazine up against the magwell when loading/electing which doesn't make me believe that a 300 blk mag would behave differently since as I understand it, the difference is near the top of the follower and the front part of the mag which is cut out more. Not sure if that would impact tight seating, but i suspect not, because if this was an issue, why would Henry give me a PMAG for 5.56/.223.
I am not sure whether it is just a break in period or not...but glad I tried it out as this would have been a possible HD gun should everything else get banned. But with inconsistent feeding, it may just become a plinker and I can save on buying much more 300 BLK rounds.
