Looking for a cheap semi .22 to go out shooting for fun and use on an indoor range (25 yard). The ones I have it narrowed down to are the marlin 795 for $140, remington 597 with iron sights for $170 or scope combo for $200

What says CGN? Any other recommendations around or under the $200 mark.

marlin 795 or marlin 60 hands down. there is no need for a scope at 25m, and the marlin is BY FAR the most accurate and reliable sub $200 semi auto you will ever find out of the box... In my opinion.

Plain-Jane Ruger 10/22 - sure there is something in your price range in the EE... New in the store I've seen them for $250

Lots of room to grow with one.... and mod too!

I have a gift card for Bass Pro so that's where I will be buying it (luckily they do price match)

Seriously, most hi-cap mags are junk anyhow. But you can get 25 rounders for the 795 from shooters ridge. but like most they suck. If hi-cap mags are a pre-requisite must have feature... save up for a 10/22. you can get steel lipped 25's for 10/22's that work well. But it may not be as accurate as a 795 without replacing the internals, and/or the barrel down the road.

to put it in perspective you can get a new 795 and five, 10 round mags for the same price as a basic stock ruger 10/22.

It's really what you want it for. a 10/22 is the way to go if you want to be able to customize it with VQ everything and fancy tactical stocks.

The 795 is a no frills gun that doesn't have much in the way of aftermarket accessories, but it works very very well out of the box, never jams, and is hella accurate. it also has a last shot bolt hold open and auto bolt release for quick mag change, ruger does not. just sayin'... you dont always get what you pay for.

And yes, people may jump on me because im a "marlin guy" and im always dissing the 10/22. So what? Marlins are awsome. So are 10/22's. One will cost you less than $200 for a tack drivin' super reliable plain jane gun. The other You can throw money at till the cows come home and you have an imitation ar-15 that shoots no better than a 795, but looks cooler... what can i say? im a realistic minimalist.

Thanks for the info, I think I will just go with the 795 and a few extra mags. Wholesale sports has it for $140 and Bass Pro will match that. Hopefully they have some extra mags, if not where is the best place to get some extra mags.

Yeah, avoid the Ruger - Marlin 795 or 60 are far better. Not as many aftermarket pieces, but they've got accuracy and reliability out the wazoo.

Everyone always ends up selling their 'prized' Rugers - there's 11 used ones on the first page of the EE alone. Don't believe their hype.

If your 10/22 is so much better than any other .22, how come there are always masses of them for sale in the EE? Whereas, you will not find a single ad in the past year for a Marlin 60... and that rifle has outsold the Ruger 3 times over.

The Ruger is all hype, and overpriced hype at that. Get over it.
Wow, this guy really hates the Rugers

Why are there so many 10/22 for sale on the EE?

Probably why there are so many Honda Civic and Mazda 3 for sales in car dealership... there's just more of them been sold 'new' so it's kind of normal there are more of them for sale 'used'.

Heck, most 10/22 guys end up with more then one...

This been said, the Marlin is a nice rifle. I'm sure frumpy will enjoy it!

Thats incorrect. Look up both marlin 60, and ruger 10/22 on wikipedia...

Ruger sold over 5 million since 1964

Marlin 60 sold over 11 million since 1960... thats just the model 60!

Yet still we see no marlin model 60's in the EE... strange? no, theyre better so nobody buys one, dolls it up, sinks hundreds into it, only to realize that it's still just a .22 with loads of equity in it, so they try to reclaim their equity in the EE... usually at quite a loss. They buy Marlin 60's and keep them because they're awesome!

I am going to (most likely) go with the marlin. It's ready to shoot out of the box in basic form and I'm just looking for something to have fun with and a reliable shooter. Just got my PAL and this will be gun two in two weeks. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

because people buy them, add on cold air intakes, exhausts, racing seats, and cool rims then realize they could have bought a factory performance car that's better for less money.... sorry I had too cou:

Thanks, I had blast shooting my buddies .22 and am now looking forwards to owning one. I will probably pick up a 10/22 in the future off the ee as well to decide for myself.

I own a Ruger 10/22 and a Savage MKII (I know, a bolt, not a semi), and I must say, the Savage was a real eye-opener when it came to the Ruger's accuracy. I now have the Ruger where I want it, but the Savage still has a bit of an edge for ragged holes. The Savage? $200. The Ruger? I hate to add it all up, but let's just say a few times the MSRP all-in with after market accessories...

Don't buy a stock 10/22 if you're expecting ragged holes. If you're buying something to whack a few gophers, and accessorize later on, there are few guns that are as fun to tinker with.
