HERA Gen 2 SL8 lower and Spuhr G36 mag adaptor review

Just FYI, HK now offers Harris bipods with HK part numbers as accessories. I guess the G36E bipod was not that popular when there are better options already out there.

Nice write up

Btw I am building totally different setup here
I put the IDZ stock and trying to get the barreal re-profile to G36E spec
(I Luckily get a spare SL8 barreal for reasonable price )
Now just waiting for the G36E bayonet lug in order to get right size to re-profile it
and the HK low profile top rail with build in sight

Here are some picture but the whole project is not complete yet

Yeah, those new IDZ folders are a huge improvement over the G36E folder. Is that conversion kit one of the bostick G36 conversion parts? I think if I was going to do one, I'd go with the aluminum adaptor from chopstix kid and a real G36 lower. They seem to get the best reviews for durability, but an accurate G36 repro isn't on my list of priorities right now.

I believed the lower is part of the "TN" conversion

I was thinking about the HDPS aluminum block with real G36 FBI lower
but this TN lower seems working fine and for me the carbon plastic looks
better to fit into the whole package I may change my mind after I start to shoot it more
after I complete the project. Now with the SL8 barreal it's just huge over weight front end
and I got the IDZ aluminum foregrip so make it even worse

Yeah I am into the "legit" setup more than the "custom" setup
I believe the weight reduced G36E IDZ setup will be a good rival for the NR ACR ...
but it cost quite more ....

Great writeup and nice looking SL8's gentlemen. I really like the look of the Hensoldt ZO 4X30. I think I'd get more use out of it than my Hensoldt Duel Optic. I may have to look at getting one down the road. At the moment I'm leaning more toward a DMR concept but the G36 look is winning me over a bit. I don't think I'll ever pursue a build but it's nice to see a rifle doesn't have to look like an M4 to be cool.

The Zeiss / Hensoldt ZO4x30 got huge improvement of the FOV over
old dual optical
I used to own a dual optical but I sold it to fund the ZO and Zpoint red dot

Here is the comparsion for both FOV
the ZO has even better FOV and eye relif than ACOG TA01/TA31

IMHO the very definition of ugly is an SL8 with an M4 stock or an Ar15-looking front rail on it - yuck. We definitely agree on that.

I know I keep procrastinating. I'd do it now but my daughter has a bunch of kids over for a play date and I don;t want to haul this out in front of them to weight it - lol. Maybe later tonight. You'll have to settle for actual weight and estimated weight minus the scope and rings. Bushnell specifies the scope weighs 27oz (1.7lbs). I suspect that is actually low since they list hte same weight for the non-IR version of the scope and the IR version is definitely a little heavier, maybe by an ounce. The TPS rings are supposedly 0.3 lbs though I didn;t weight them (googled it!).

I'll weigh the rifle later with the bipod detached and subtract 2 lbs to cover the optics setup as per above and that should be a pretty good approximation of the mass.

Cheers.

ok, weight with optics and rings, but no mag and no bipod (bipod and adaptor removed, but HK accessory rail left on) is 11.4#. If we subtract 2# for the optics setup, the rifle comes in around 9.4# as depicted. Most of that is the huge hammer-forged target barrel. I suspect a G36E contoured barrel would shave another couple pounds off the rifle. If weight were still a concern, the HERA adaptor comes with an insert allowing you to mount an Ar15 buttstock on it and some of those are a fair bit lighter than the ACR buttstock. The rest of the rifle is essentially a lightweight polymer chassis with a fairly heavy bolt carrier design that you cannot make any lighter if you want the rifle to cycle properly.

Hope that helps everyone!

@BBB: I have yet to hear from anyone who has actually used the factory HK 416 magazine adaptor. HK, on their own website, mention it is not STANAG compatible - in other words they confirm Pmags and HK416 mags will fit, but they essentially say you are on your own for any other mags. The NEA adaptor works, and is the least expensive option at about $150, but it is also the heaviest adaptor by a wide margin. Some people report the bolt hold-open intermittently not working and that mirrors my experience with that adaptor. For the price, it's a great option though. In terms of best, I vote the Spuhr. It's ambi-dextrous, STANAG compatible, and very light. The only real detractor is that it costs more than any other mag well adaptor - more than twice the cost of an NEA and about $50 more than even the HK part.

Thanks for that, who know somthing could cost more then HK!!
So if not STANAG is it as simple as the mag well not being big enought to fit all mags in the STANAG range?
Years ago i have AR 15 mag well adaptors for the Galil it did not work very well eaither , wondering if its the same issue.
The CZ VZ adaptors dont seem to work all that well eaither, least the plastic ones ive used.
What are we all missing hear??

No idea BBB, but in HK's case, they produce the hk416 and the mags for it, so I suspect they would prefer g36 issuing agencies who also run 416s to stick with the expensive HK mags vs anyone else's offerings.

Spuhr, on the other hand, does not make mags and set out to make a stanag adaptor targeted at users who also field the m16. It's also the most hi-speed, lo drag option with ambi controls.

Claven,

Did you have any issues when installing the Index Plate and spring? I could not for the life of me get the Index Plate down far enough against the spring to rotate the notched disk and move the RH safety selector into position. Without the spring no problem... at the moment I have a smaller spring I had laying around in there and its working.

It looks as though my SL8 butt stock had a small extra recess where the spring sits and the Hera2 doesn't have this recess so when compressing the original spring completely its still not far enough to rotate the notched disk to be able to install the RH Safety selector.

Thought about cutting the factory spring down, but the one I have in there seems to have enough tension the selector wont move on its own or while firing.

Other issues I had was Hera seems to have drilled some holes to small. The left side Safety Selector hole was to small and I couldnt even start to get the safety selector in without reaming the hole larger, and the same goes for the two holes for the Buffer Plate spring pin, had to ream those as well as they were far to small for the pin to go in. And just a note... looking around on HKPro and others, the right hand Hammer Spring should be tucked behind the small tabbed wall in the housing and not underneath the pin as per the directions... wasnt that difficult to install this way and has slightly more load on the hammer.

The FCG is together and functioning now.. just wondering if anyone else had to go through the steps I did for proper function and install.

Hey guys, you know that little white plastic buffer, I was just looking at the SL8 with conversion i bought used and it does not have that. it also never came with the gun... know where I could get one? or even how important it is?
