Here is how i am going to choose between a semi and a revolver

I realize i am going to have to make a decision between having a centrefire revolver or semi-automatic. To do this i am going to purchase one of each in a .22 calibre. The revolver is already bought and paid for, S&W model 617, just waiting for the paperwork to arrive in the mail and i will purchase a ruger mark III sometime this week.

The plan is to shoot each one an equal number of rounds, advice appreciated on the number of rounds to use over an extended period of time, and once i have done that i will make a decision on which one i enjoy shooting the most.

Once that is done i will sell the rimfire that i enjoyed the least and purchase a centrefire.

I will only have the one centrefire and rimfire handgun, as a large collection is not possible and i still need to buy a shotgun and a rifle.

Is it just for target shooting at the range? Are you at all interested in shooting sports?

What I currently have is a 22 rimfire revolver, and a glock 21sf in 45 ACP. I find the centerfire autos are much higher quality than the rimfire. I love the rim fire revolver, eventually I'll get a centerfire revolver, but for now it works for me. Buy both, like your plan, run at least a couple bricks of ammo through each of them, find out what they each work best with. The revolver will be much less finnicky with ammo, obviously. Best part of your plan, if you do it this way, is you'll be taking a fair amount of time learning to shoot properly right off the bat, for the least amount of money. Figure two bricks through each, you've fired off 2000 rounds for under $100.
Also once you go centrefire, I'd strongly recommend getting into reloading, right of the hop. Really lets you shoot a lot more for the same $$$. If you're anything like me the press will pay for itself very quickly.

That S&W 617 will make you fall in love with revolvers - The MkIII just don't have anywhere near the charm.

I agree with curtmg on the centrefire semi perceived quality vs. cost issue... You can get a great pistol for $700, whereas a revolver may be $1000.

That said, I personally would stay the hell away from Glock, BUT.... To each their own!
