Newbie looking for an all purpose shot gun, at least i know what gauge i want a 12g, pump, and black. All purpose includes birds, small game, deer, and trap, skeet. I kind of had dis thread going for skeet and trap but things have changed, i'm also new to shooting on the whole and enjoying it a-lot. I have been leaning towards the sxp and nova, kind of ruled out the bps because of the price, but it's still there. help anyone.

+1 for a mossberg combo. I'd choose mossberg or even a maverick over Stevens any day. You may want to have a look at the mossberg 535 ats. Camo finish is very durable and it has a 3.5" chamber if necessary.

I picked up a Nova 28" black synthetic and it is a really nice no nonsense shotgun. Very easy to field strip and fit me perfectly.

I don't think it makes sense for me to use it for skeet. Either the game is tough enough for me as a beginner or I just naturally suck at it :) that I don't want to be working the action for a doubles shot. An O/U or an autoloader seems to be the best option for skeet.

That said, I'm glad that I picked the Nova up first. It will always be around as a no nonsense pump. Once my boys grow up a bit they can use it and maybe I will get my wife out shooting a few clays in the back fourty with me.

Definitely go back to the store and hold all the guns you can in your price range. All the features in the world won't mean much if the gun doesn't sit with you and you can't shoot it! If you're looking for a "do it all" I would definitely buy something that can handle the 3.5's. I'd look into the Mossberg 835 as I have the 935 (autoloader version) and I love it. I have a friend that shoots an 870 express supermag with a 26" barrel that he absolutely loves. I've only ever seen it stove-pipe a couple times with really cheap Winchesters but otherwise he can cycle that thing like a champ. For a 135lb guy he can also handle the 3.5's in it pretty well. I've also shot the Benelli SuperNova with 3.5's and even though it's kind of an eye sore (and the birds won't care) it points and cycles very smoothly for me. Recoil is pretty manageable for a lighter gun as well. You might want to read some reviews by chuckhawks if you're still unsure.

I don't think that the benelli's are eyesores, i actually like the look i'd keep the wood for furniture, just my opinion, thats why i started this thread with the SXP or the nova both feel great when i shoulder them, the supernova is just outside the budget, or there would not be a choice, same with the BPS's. I also agree with having a 3.5" option.

Either the game is tough enough for me as a beginner or I just naturally suck at it :) that I don't want to be working the action for a doubles shot.

As a beginner learning the game ask the puller to give you those doubles as report doubles. That is where the first bird of the pair is thrown as a single and the second bird is thrown at the sound of your first shot being fired.

In addition go to youtube and search for "Chris Batha Skeet" he has an excellent series of videos detailing how to shoot skeet station by station

So you'd buy the supernova regardless if it was in your price range? Sounds like you just need to save a little longer. If it were me and I settled because of a few hundred bucks it would always bother me. Definitely pickup the supernova if that's what you really want.

How is the 535, pros / cons ?

A friend of mine purchased his 1st shotgun last week. A Mossberg 530,3"in chamber. The 535 is 3.5". He bought the 3 barrel combo. The turkey barrel didn't make it out of the store because the rear sight snagged the packaging and bent it. They are replacing it. The rifled slug barrel had the actual rear sight mounted 1/4in. off to the right and was loose so it's going back. The long barrel was fine, we shot several boxes of shells at skeet and the gun functioned fine. My advice to him from the start was to spend a little more and buy the Browning BPS he was considering and be done. Money wasn't an issue with him but the 3 barrels is what made him decide, in case he takes up hunting more than just small game. He seems to happy with it and thats what counts. I told him next time a gun has issues when unpacking it at the store put it back and look at something else!!!

Take a look at this thread if you're after an all purpose shotgun.
