Here's a thought for a 597 barrel change. . .

Has anyone else ever pondered adapting a 10/22 aftermarket barrel to fit a Rem 597? I'm gonna give it a try, but before I attempt it, I thought I would tap the collective knowledge of the Forum (gotta love Gunnutz!).

I bought a lightly used factory 597 barrel from the EE to sacrifice for the project. This is in case it doesn't work out, I wont have a barrel-less gun. My plan is to cut off the part of the barrel that mates with the receiver, drill out the center of it to 11/16" to accept a 10/22 barrel tenon, copy the wedge piece that clamps the barrel to the receiver and drill/tap it to accept the v-block screws et voila! Right?

Well, not quite. There are a few problems that one must contend with:

1. The 10/22 tenon is about .75" long and the part of the 597 barrel that mates with the receiver is roughly a half inch thick. My hypothetical solution, make a spacer.

2. The 10/22 tenon is just big enough in diameter that it interferes with the holes that receive the action guide rods. My hypothetical solution, replace guide rods with rods that are ground down slightly at one end to fit in the unaffected portion of the holes in the barrel-to-receiver mating plate (at this point, whatever you wanna call that thing haha)

3. The clincher: the base of the 10/22 barrel is .920" thick and the 597 barrel is .75" thick and fits tightly against the receiver at the top. My hypothetical solution, either one has to give a little; either the receiver has to be relieved or the barrel turned down slightly.

On one hand, altering the action that much seems like an excessive amount of cutting, and on the other I would like to fit barrels to it without having to turn a step down into them. Volquartsen did their aftermarket replacement by turning a step into their barrel:

I would like to keep the alterations to solve problem #3 to a minimum. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? (other than buy another 10/22 and get over this idea).

Thanks, Steve.

Why not buy a 10/22? I am sorry but I own a 597 Magnum, I did the mag fix, new hammer, extractor, adjusted the guide rods to work better than the original factory standard, got a boyd stock and Tech Sights Peep sights but this is a bit much for a 300 dollar gun.
