Heritage Rough Rider vs Ruger Wrangler

I bought 3 of each... One for my wife, daughter & myself... No time to lose with the freeze on the horizon!

I will say that with the 22LR Rough Rider you can get a 22WMR cylinder, sometimes they come with them... The Wrangler is only 22LR.

Oh, and the Rough Rider has the 4 C...O...L...T... clicks, the Wrangler doesn't.

wow thank you for the info, I think I know exactly what I need now. Rough rider it is.

I went with a Ruger due to brand recognition, plus me and a friend split one of the Two-for-cheap deals some dealers had on a few months ago so it worked out as the cheaper option.

I have also heard the Rough Riders are less accurate than some 22 single actions because they are built to shoot both 22lr and 22wmr (.223 vs .224 cal) and thus have an ever so slightly oversized bore when shooting 22lr. That said, I would probably buy the Rough Rider over the Wrangler if its going to be like $50 cheaper.

I do wish my Wrangler had half-#### notches. If I knew this fact before buying I probably would have gotten the Rough Rider, but the Wrangler was so cheap in the 2-fer deal...

Have both, really don’t like that the wrangler doesn’t click. The cylinder free spins so you have to line it up manually to eject spent brass.

The wrangler takes it on fit and finish but I enjoy my heritage more. I got the 22lr/22wmr combo because I also have a heritage rancher and the conversion cylinder is interchangeable.

I watched a lot of video etc between the Heritage Rough Rider, the Chiappa 1873, and the Ruger Wrangler. I bought both the Chiappa and the Heritage and have the Ruger on order.

From what i watched, most reviews thought the fit and finish on the Ruger was best. It also the only one that has transfer bar "safety".

The Heritage has a conventional safety that long time shooters really did not like. As a new shooter it did not bother me, but no matter how much you try, it will catch you trying to shoot with it on.

Both the Chiappa and the Heritage have 4 click hammer and the half #### load alignment where the Ruger will free wheel making lining up the ejector rod problematic on occasion or if you are hurrying. I can unload both the H and C just by click and feel, and not even looking at them.

A word of caution is if you get the heritage make sure the ejector rod screw and all the back strap screws are tight. In fact before you shoot it take them out one at a time and put a drop of blue loctite on them. I lost the ejector rod screw day 1 and it was a pain to get an OEM screw for it. As I said I am not a long time shooter but everyone who has tried my heritage remarks on how nice and smooth the trigger is on it.

All being said I am happy with both the Chiappa and the Heritage and I really want to see that Wrangler show up here so i can have the full set. If you can afford it i would recommend you do the same!

PS The Chiappa was dirt cheap and probably the best deal gun I own. Came with both the 22lr and 22 mag cylinder so like getting 2 guns for $225. They have a few on auction at SFRC auctions right now. If the bids end up low enough I may buy a couple more just for count!.

Any idea where I can purchase the WMR cylinder? I purchased the Rough rider from FOC ( don't have it yet ) and I'd like to get the WMR cylinder

Anybody else having trouble with the heritage? Took it to the range today , brand new out of the box.
Put in 6 CCI .22lr cocked, and got 6 clicks......thought hmmm, must have the safety on. But flipped the switch and got the same 6 clicks with no round going off.
Then making sure that the safety was off, all I got was failure to fire, light strikes on the case rims. Then I switched to the .22 WMR cylinder and loaded some CCI WMR ammo and got the same 6 clicks and thought WTF !!!
The only way I can get it to fire was to hold the trigger and fan the hammer like a western gunfighter, but still only about 3 of 6 would fire .
It cant possibly just be an ammo problem, cuz it the same with both calibers, unless CCI is absolute garbage......
So far I'm not happy with this rough rider POS!
Anybody else having light strikes or failure to fire ???
Any suggestions.

I do get more fail to fire from my Heritage from light strikes (but not 6 out of 6) than my Chiappa, but I would say it is getting better the more I use it. I have used all sorts of ammo (some that i have had in my storage box for 30 years). The main stuff I use was Aguila and Remington cheap ammo. Do you make sure the bullets are fully set in the cylinder? I do know some of my ammo seems to be a bit more "swollen" cases that others and you have to push it to fully seat in the cylinder. If it is not fully set it will move when the firing pin hits it

Otherwise I would say something is either in the way of the hammer/fire pin or the timing is slightly off, or the cylinder is sitting loose. Give it 2 clicks and see if the cylinder is loose or moves around. Gravel Agency (http://www.gravelagency.com/) is the distributor and place to go for warranty. You may have to send it to them for repair, but they are reasonable in communication. I would also check around on other forums to see if there is someone with the same problem may have a simple solution. Looked and one guy spoke of the cam on the safety not fully turning so it was like the safety was always on so check that the safety goes fully off when moved

Here is the manual link with a schematic with parts list https://heritagemfg.com/heritage-rough-rider-small-bore-revolver-instruction-manual.pdf

Also keep an eye out on the screws in that gun, especially on the ejector rod and back strap. They will back out. A little preventive amino of taking them out and then blue loctite is recommended.

Shot both but own the Ruger. Found the Ruger slightly more accurate. To kick the accuracy up a little, I carefully applied some finger nail polish to the front sight post to increase the contrast within the sight picture. Worked for me.

At the end of the day, for the price, either was a good choice. Helped introduce a lot of people to shooting a revolver that would normally not have purchased one.

No issues using remington, federal or winchester ammo in the 22lr cylinder on mine. With the 22WMR cylinder I'll get 3 or 4 rounds to fire per cylinder. But usually I can put the unfired rounds back in the cylinder and they'll fire the second time. That's using CCI ammo 40gr maxi mags. I'm going to try some different wmr ammo to see if it runs better if not I'm just going to run 22lr as all I wanted was a cheap plinker.

Option of 9 shots instead of 6 plus WMR conversion made the Rough Rider an easy choice for me.

I don't believe the same gun will run with the 9-shot cylinders. It requires a different model.
BTW, still waiting for mine to be approved and shipped. I got the WMR cylinder months before I'll get the gun.

Too late to help the OP's decision but I'll still put in my .02 cents.

From what I can see the Ruger (which I own) was made for actual field use; trapping, croc hunting, small game etc... It is built solid and has a durable finish. While the Heritage is more of a cute Colt repro for range/target shooting.
